The lecturer prefaced hi* discourse by remarking, that in the present Ie*tare, he should quit the subject of carbonic ??'id. although he should have occasion to ad vert to it. when be came to treat in a future lecture on combustion. The first compound descr.bed was that of nrbonic oxide, the lecturer explaining the difference between it and carbonic acid, the UttereontainiEg two atoms of oxygen, while the oiide cootains bat one. The usual methods of making the above named compound or gas. were then explained, the theory of which con sists in depriving carbonic acid of one atom of oxygea. so that it becomes changed into the oiidc.
