Cut Will Be as Large as That of Last Year-Four Hundred Men to Be Employed Manager J. M. Richards of the Crookston Lumber company to day stated that the company's plant in this city would resume operations on April 1. "Prom the start," said Mr. Richards, "both a day and night crew will be employed, and, al though there is no definite man ner of ascertaining the amount of timber that will be manufac tured, we expect that the cut will be fully as large as last year. We will employ about 400 men, 200 on each shift." The amount of lumber cut last year byv the company's mill in this city was about 35,000,000 feet, but in view of the fact that only a day crew was employed during the early part of the sea son, it is expected that cut of the plant during the coming summer will exceed that of last year. 1fr *fc~ i* hr fee* COURT SETS MARCH 21 1 ***u Large Number of Cases to Be Tried at Spring Term of District Court. SMALLER CRIMINAL CALENDAR THAN LAST YEAR. Only Fourteen Criminal Cases to Be Tried at Spring Term No Murder Charges The spring term of distrist court for Beltrami county will convene on next Tuesday, March 21, and Judge Snooner will sit to try the 72 cases now on the calendar, which is in the hands of the printer. At the last session of court in Bemidji the calendar was com posed of 71 cases, one less than the calendar for the term this spring, but there were a number of important murder cases to be disposed of, and it is thought that the term this spring will not consume as much time as the fall term last year. Fourteen criminal cases are on the calendar this spring, but there are no murder cases, and it is thought that this will con siderably lessen the length of the term. A large number of civil cases are to be tried, however, and there are a number of important matt...

PEA80DY MAY HOLD ON SAIC NEWLY ELECTED GOVERNOR OF COLORADO WILL REPU- DIATE RESIGNATION. LEGISLATURE UNSEATS DEMOCRAT ADAMS DEPOSED AS CHIEF EX- ECUTIVE OF THE STATE BY VOTE OF 5 1 TO 41. Denver, March 18.The uppermost Buestion in legislative and political circles is whether Governor James H. Peabody will repudiate his resigna tion, which was written in advance of the action oi the general assembly de claring him entitled to the office, for the purpose of influencing Republican members who would not otherwise vote for him but who wished to place Lieutenant Governor Jesse F. McDon ald in the governor's chair. D. B. Fair ley, chairman of the Republican state committee, has strongly intimated that Governor Peabody will not resign and that his resignation, which was placed in the hands of W. S. Boynton for fil ing with the secretary of state, was morel} "tentative" and will be with drawn. Governor Peabody himself is non-committal on the subject, merely saying he is ''in the hands of hi...

7*J DESERVES SUPPORT Public Library Needs the l^n Active Assistance of Every Citizen. fy WORKS ACCOMPLISHED BY THE LADIES OF BEMIDJI. Musicale Planned for Monday March 27 for Benefit of the Library. It is a little more than a year since the Bemidji Public Library was founded, yet today the library contains nearly 1500 vol umes and enjoys a patronage from the people of the city which is steadily increasing. Yet the library is without any "visable means of support." To maintain it, to say nothing of the cost of new books which must be added constantly if the library is to be of seryice to the city, costs in the neighborhood of $300 per year at present To raise this money the ladies who are giving freely of their time for the city's benefit need and should have the active cooperation of every citizen. The library is of incalcuable benefit to Bemidji and a little thought, a little effort and a little contribution on the part of each citizen will make it soon one of the best libraries in...

VOLUME 2. NUMBER 273. LONG RAGE TO HARBIN RETIRING RUSSIANS CONTNUE NORTHWARD WITH JAPS IN CLOSE PURSUIT. FATE OF MUSCOVITES STILL IN DOUBT MIKADO'S TROOPS MAY YET SUC- CEED IN CUTTING THE LINE OF RETREAT. St. Petersburg March 21.Anxiety regarding the fate of General I.ine viteh's force continues, the main dan ger to them being the Japanese col umns which are hurrying northward along the great trade route twenty miles west and parallel with the line of retreat. The heads of these col umns were officially reported to be passing Fakoman, thirty miles north west of Tie pass, on Friday. Their appearance doubtless hastened the Russian retirement, which may now lxa\"e become literally a race north ward, as once the Russians are head ed it would be easy for the Japanese, by a short cut, to throw themselves across the line of retreat. After leaving Kaiyuan General Line vitch is believed to have divided his army, the main portion clinging to the railroad and the other falling back along the ...
