Osage Orange. We have been frequently desired to furnish directions for the planting the seed and preparing the ground for the plant, the transplanting. and the system best adapted to make a permanent hedge. This is a subject of very great importance in this country ; the cost of fencing is one of the heaviest bills the cultivator has to bear, and it is, or should be, his first care that what he does, should be done well. We know that many suppose that it would require a great length of time to secure a Hedge from the Seed : yet it is not so. If the proper care is given in planting, cultivating. transplanting, and heading in and forming the hedge, three years from the seed will give a very good barrier against intrusion ; the fourth year a strong protection, and I ha fifth year an impregnable fence, a protection agaitu.t man and beast, oral even the smaller nnimnls. j We redernmend the following rules t,i ho i adiiptcd. to secure the most desirable fence necui d hi C-'.-r-rma ; Firs...

SAN PEDRO. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 11 February 1854

SAN PEDRO. Los Angeles Star, Saturday, February 11, 1854. William A. Wallace, Editor. It ia gratifying to know that an effort will be made, during the present session of Congress, .to constitute San Pedro a Port of Entry. ■Some time since our citizens address?ed a letter to the Appraiser General in regard to the matter, and the facts therein represented, to•gether with his own observations, induced him ; at once to forward to the Department a most fa. vorable recommendation. And the increased and the increasing importance of this rich and beautiful portion of California, has at length merited the consideration of our Representatives at Washington, and we may rest assured that a simple act of justice will be accorded to a place which is the natural, and only outlet of a region containing an aggregate of ifn million of acre*, a great part of which is capable of the highest cultivation. With the vapid and steady increase of an enterprising population, the trade which passes through San...
