Ewing grew up In Robinson county, Tenn., where he was born In 1877, and lived there until he came to California, something like three years ago, since which time It has been my privilege to know him as an Intimate friend. I knew his private life, I knew him as a man who had the Courage of bis convictions. He was just, temperate and faithful to all of his obligations, but one of the most marked attributes of his character was his high sense of honesty. Along-with bis gracious courtesy on all occasions to all people, his motives were always high, and yet his methods were not theoretical, but practical. Death had no terrors for him, for he has often said to me, in the language of Shakespeare, "Would I were dead; if God's good will were so." His...

BISHOP HAMILTON AT GARVANZA [Newspaper Article] — Highland Park Herald — 23 June 1906

BISHOP HAMILTON AT GARVANZA Bishop J. ,W. Hamilton preached at the Garvanza Methodist Episcopal church last Sunday morning to a large congregation. His sermon was interesting, practical and helpful, and was highly appreciated by his hearers. The church has had the burden of a debt since the erection of the new edifice two years ago. The trustees requested Bishop Hamilton to ask the congregation for $3,000, which amount would fully cover the indebtedness. At the close of bis sermon the bishop presented the matter and, to the great gratification of the church, the amount asked for was so nearly subscribed that when the subscriptions of absentees are received the balance is assured.
