The Mouth of the Columbia River. We have received the following communication from a source entitled to credit and cheerfully give it a place. It will he a source of great gratification to every one taking an interest in the affairs of the Pacific coast to learn that the navigation of the mouth of the Columbia River is attended with less danger than has been supposed : By tho arrival of the bark Louisiana, Capt. Crosby, from Portland, O. T. and four days from the mouth of the Columbia river, we learn that the energetic and gentlemanly Captain White of the pilot boat Mary Taylor now stationed at that place with a company of pilots under branches from the authorities of O. T., have successfully examined and surveyed the south channel of that river ; that Captain G. who is known to be an experienced navigator has really found a channel that he could "boat a frigate through with not less than five fathoms water. " He also states that it is free from the calms often experienced in enteri...

SAN JOAQUIN AND PLACER INTELLIGENCE [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 6 March 1850

SAN JOAQUIN AND PLACER INTELLIGENCE I Correspondence of the AHa California.] Stocktox, March 3, 1850. Messrs. Editors : Two weeks Ago I had an interview with onr " oldest inhabitant," nnd learned from him that winter wns then over, and that we would have no more rain. It Appears that ho was mistaken, for we have 1.. mi flooded within the hist two days. This lias proved a damper to business, which was becoming quite brisk . but the sky is clear again, and we look now for 11 long season of dry weather. Hut hero we may be disappointed ; for it is possible that the immense quantity of smoke generated by the gold hunters of California may prolong the rainy season. Stockton 1- now quite 11 largo city . and notwithstanding nil that has been said, during the winter, about new towns higher up the Han .lo;n|iiin. it is still pro gressing. Handsome frame buildings are going up in all directions. Our enterprising fellow-citizen, C. M. Weber, Esq., I am told, has several improvements in contempl...

LOCAL MATTERS. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 6 March 1850

LOCAL MATTERS. Olympic Amjthithcatre. — The domestic Scotch melodrama of " Two Drovers" was played for the first time Hsaaaf nlghl The story ia.very interesting and Ihe'tV nuuimcnt forcible and effective. We only witnessed tin; second act, with which we were very much pleased. The company appear to work together better and better every night and we notice lew frequently those stioks and ronIn' hint's which so mar a theatrical performance. A strict attention to their duties, and a perfect knowledge of the text of their author, will ensure them that approbation and success with the public which they deuiro to attain. Mr. lluuibleton as Mi Combish gave another evidonce, in the rendition of that character, of his versatility of tuleiitand capacity to sustain a loading position in any theatre. JUrs. Kirby as Ehpct hardly infuaed energy and spirit enough into tho diameter of the wild, dreamy prophetess. Mrs. iliiniblet.u. played Mntha McAlpin, as «ho docs everything that is entrusted to h...
