Bullock said the analysis lists 41 other states that get better returns on their in- come tax dollars. "The reasons we have a lower retur said the Comptroller, "are that we have a relatively low state and local tax effort, we have less unemployment than the national average and because Texas has a tradition of independence from federal programs." ALL BASTROP COUNTY VOL.85, NO. 35 THURSDAY AUGUST 26,1976 Crash Claims Four Lives GOLDTHWAITE Tragedy struck the Carroll Smith family of Smithville late Thursday night when the Cessna 182 that Smith was piloting crashed in an empty field twenty miles west of the small Texas town of Goldthwaith. Killed in the accident that occured about 11:45 p.m. the night of August 19 were Carrol Clayton Smith, 48, his wife Janis Kennedy Smith, 45, and their two daughters Christina Eloise, 12, and Jana Ree Maurcine, 8. The Smiths were en route home from Colorado Springs where they had spent the past few days vacationing when the accident occured. According to David Bridg- ford, an employee of Abilene Aero, Smith landed there at about 8:45 p.m. Thursday and took on twenty gallons of fuel, ten gallons in each wing. Activities will begin with a delicious homecooked meal of mouthwatering homemade sausage, fried and dressed chicken, potato salad, sauerkraut, green beans, pintos, pickles cake, and coffee and tea selling for $2.50 a plate for adults and SI.25 for children under 12. An old-time auction sale will be held starting at 3 p.m. Livestock, cows and calves, heifers, a steer ready to butcher, quilts, paintings, pickles, pot plants, antiques, and other items will be auctioned by Bill Henderson of Bastrop. Viola Martinez of the Texas Department of Public Welfare contacted Father Tom of St. Paul's and asked if the CYO would like to have a project to raise money for the county foster children. The money raised would go to provide clothes for those entering school. At 8 a.m. Thursday morn- ing, twelve teenagers and Father Tom left Smithville escorted by a Bastrop County SherrifFs deputy. The three boys' coaches at Elgin High School will this year be joined by a fourth staff member, hired princi- pally to head the varsity basketball program. Dennis Kaman comes to Elgin after three winning seasons as head basketball coach for the AAA ranked Del Valle Cardinals. This fall Kaman will stay busy coaching the freshman football team, and in the spring he will assist Wayne Schubert in coaching Elgin's track teai Kaman. his wife, and four children -- Christine Marie, 14. Jeffery Paul, 13. Timothy Michael. 10. and Anthony 'Lawrence, 7 - have just moved to Elgin. Kaman is looking forward to the basketball season, and remarked. "The mon- key's on my back.
