I Kici'ofj.lrn Center, Inc. F. i). Box 45436 Dallas, Texas 75235 County Officials Circulate Petition For Pay Increase BASTROP — County officials are calling for a meeting to discuss a salary raise. County Judge Jack Griesenbeck received a petition Monday from elected county officers, asking that he convene the grievance commit- tee. The petition, dated Nov. 30. states: "The County Budget for Bastrop County for the year 1979 as ap- proved by the Commissioners Court does not include a raise in salary for the elected officials of the county. "We understand that there is a substantial surplus in the salary fund, and because of the sharp increase in the cost of living already experienced and more anticipated, we feel that we are entitled to an increase in salary. "We request a hearing before the Grievance Committee as soon as it is possible to call a meeting of the committee." PAGE 2 THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES, SMITHVILLE. TEXAS 789S7 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7,1978 Our' 0 inion s Stay Home As one who has often said that it was not possible to shop locally because of high prices or small inventories in area stores, a trip last Saturday into Austin caused some second thoughts. True, the million dollar malls offer a greater selection. Also correct, there are some bargains to be had. Equally clear, however, is the fact that driving 60 miles and fighting city mobs and traffic for the entire day is no piece of cake. Would it be impossible to find something for Aunt Sally in a local store? Does the 50 cents saved on that sweater really make it worth while to stand in line a half hour at the cash register? Personally, 1 am going to try and finish my shopping nearer to home. 1 may spend more and may have to change some gift plans, but there are some advantages. . Most of all, 1 won't have to spend half the day driving. —JDS Sniffen Around By John Sniffen y< ■ ■ ; Pard...
