We'll-see it all then see it all as clearly as God sees us knowing Him directly just as He blows ' us! v- 1 Corinthians 13:12 (The Message) How many times have you been driving down the highway and a bug ends its life on the windshield of your car or you get behind a truck that drips some unidentifiable liquid onto your newly washed vehicle? And it never fails the bug doesn't just hit in one spot and stay. The force of its collision causes it to smear upward from the point of impact. Imagine that occurring several times in the course of one road trip. ICK! Then to top it all off it starts to rain. Not a heavy rain mind you but one that accumulates just enough water to cause you to turn on your wipers. Thus smearing the gunk although quite colorful at the moment over the entire windshield-makings impos...

Ouimette guest writer Every fall semester the freshman in physical geology and environmen- tal geology and the upper classmen in oceanography and geology take a trip to to the Enchanted Rock State Park. This year Dr. Bammel and Dr. Ouimette took 38 students to camp at Inks Lake State Park and to see the 1.1 billion year old granite known as Enchanted Rock. After many years of involvement I see the importance of a continued connec- tion to Hardin-Simmons A connection that has provided a legacy of leadership and excellence in teaching that has given my life direction many times. Page 8 -November 2 1995 -The Brand unique By Jana Broughton staff writer The Cowboy Band is a special tradition unique to Hardin-Simmons. The many men that joined the band found talented musicians good friends and close brothers with whom to share their col- lege experience. Through the 72 years of the band's existence tradition has become the band's strength. However such tradi- tions simply began by students and faculty putting their talents to use and seizing every opportunity presented to them. In 1 909 J. Dillard Davis was director of the Simmons College Band. The band num- bered 30 pieces. During these years former president of Simmons College Rupert N. Richardson often played with the band. The year 1922 brought new changes for the college band. The band had a new name new leader and a new manager. On a certain occasion Grady Kinsolv- ing secretary of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce wanted the band to promote Abilene in a special occasion. Many boys did not have a uniform and...

The Brand -November 2 1995 -Page 9 Watson's introduction leaves lasting impression Leah Dubber staff writer A young child looks up from his wheelchair with wide eyes as an enormous white head comes closer and closer still until he can breathe in the musky horse smell and touch the soft nose of Chuck one of Hardin-Simmons Univer- sity's famous Six White Horses. "Chuck loves crippled kids" said W.O. "Doc" Beazley Vice President Emeritus and director of the Six White Horse team. In 1962 Beazley had the White Horses assigned to him on a temporary basis. That temporary role turned into a per- manent one for the native Virginian who has a deep love for horses and children. Beazley has combined these loves in his nine children's books about horses. In 1 929 an Abilene resident and strong supporter of the school Will "Sheriff Watson decided to introduce a new element into the Cowboy Band's show. Watson was a "colorful personality from downtown" according to Beazley. Up until that time he ha...

The Brand -November 2 1995 -Page 11 A Century of Aihleitcs In 1931 ihe Cowboys racked up a 6-4-1 record. All four losses came at the hand of foot- ball powers -- Texas SMlf TCU and Texas Tech. Cranfill struggled through the hard years of the depression with losing records from 1931- 34. But then in 1935 the Cowboys became the first Texas college to go to a bowl game under the direction of first-year coach Kimbrough. Simmons University tied New Mexico State 14-14 in the first ever Sun Bowl in El Paso. Things just got better for the Cowpokes in 1936. Kimbrough engineered a 9-2 record topped off with a 46-0 win over Texas Mines (UT-EI Paso) in the Sun Bowl. Clyde's Pete Tyler was named to the ' Collier's All-America team and Ed Cherry received honorable mention honors from the Associated Press. The Cowboys didn't go bowling in 1937 but the team did compile the school's first unde- feated football team. Kimbrough 's Cowboys went 15-3-1 over the next two seasons and in his last year as h...

It is a time to reflect upon the Hardin-Simmons of the past and to focus on the HSU of today. As we cel- ebrate the history of this institution we often forget to pay tribute to the many individuals who have helped develop and grow the school. Dr. Jesse Fletcher chancellor and former president of HSU is one such individual that for the past 19 years has dedicated his life to the mission of maintaining and improving HSU. Fletcher came to HSU in 1977 from Knoxsville Tenn. where he was pastor at the First Baptist Church. As president Fletcher was involved in the planning and construction of the Johnson Building and the Logsdon Building. He also played a major role in the campaign to bring football back on campus and add a women's basket- ball team to the at...

Over the years it has gone through many changes that have brought it to where it is today. The earliest records found in the year- book about this group date back to 1903. At that time it was known as the Missions Band. However BSM was offi- cially organized on the Hardin-Simmons campus in 1920 by J. P. Boone under the name Baptist Student Union. It was not until October of last year that the Texas Baptist Convention voted to change the name from Baptist Student Union to Baptist Student Ministries so that it would better state their purpose. For nearly half a century all sponsors and advisors involved with BSM were stricUy volunteers from the faculty and staff on campus. Then in 1950 Truelt Sheriff was appointed as the first Director of Reli...

FCA in the Ws A growing experience at HSU By Chris Hatcher staff writer In the mid 1950's when Don McClancn and the late Dr. Louis H. Evans Sr. first founded the concept of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes a great movement began "to present to athletes and coaches and all whom they influ- ence the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior serving Him in their relationship and in the fellowship of the church." These sentiments are present today in the hearts and minds of the members of Hardin-Simmons University's FCA chapter. Since it's emphasis began in the mid-1980's the chapter has witnessed a gradual increase in membership as well as participation toward the FCA mission. With attendance almost doubling every other year for the past five years the Hardin-Simmons FCA chapter is cur- rently averaging numbers in the high 30's to low 40's on a weekly basis. The...

Two weeks ago in Brownwood the Cowboys played inspired football. HSU hung on to defeat the nationally-ranked Howard Payne Yellowjackets and avenge their only setback of the season 28-27 in front of a packed house at Gordon Wood Stadium. HSU's victory over the Yellowjackets bumped HPU out of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics top 10 while HSU jumped into the number seven spot and jumped even higher after defeating McMurry on Saturday as the Cowboys vaulted into the No. 4 spot. The game against the Yellowjackets was played close to the vest from the open- ing play with Hardin-Simmons striking ...

Senior David Seago is a four-year letterman on the HSU football team and is currently in his second season as the team's starting strong safety. Ironically Seago who is one of the best defensive players on the team almost did not choose Hardin- Simmons as his institution of higher learning. "I had already decided to go to Stephen F.
