Southern Cross Gold Mines. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 4 December 1895

Southern Cross Gold Mines. The rich gold discoveries which are being weekly made in and around Southern Cross is most pleasing proof, that gold mining here will shortly assume a magnitude which will render this town and district one of the most important mining centres in Western Australia. The Central Gold Mine continues to develop most satisfactorily, and the same remarks ?apply to the No. 1 Central Extended. Eraser's and Fraser's South also show very excellent results, and when we say that these are all dividend paying mines? we say for them what c§n be. said fop very '£e'\y, if any, of the vaunted mines fur-Mier eastward. The Qolden. Pig is now being vigorously worked, and ere long a very large number of miners will be engaged on this property. The Transvaal Gold industry. SOME EXTRAORDINARY FIGURES. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 4 December 1895

The Transvaal Gold In-* dustry. SOME EXTRAOB DINAH Y FIGUEES. The ' Economist' contains a valuable article on 'The Capitalisation of the Transvaal Gold Industry.' The article opens by referring to the increase of speculation in South African gold mining shares, although many shrewd operators have recently been taking their profits, leaving outside gamblers to carry on the boom. The ' Economist' finds it impossible to obtain information with regard to all the companies formed in connection with' the Transvaal gold-field, but has managed to get the capital, .ac count of 179 of them. Of this total, 25 are dividend-paying, the dividends, paid in 1895 ranging from 6 per cent, to 100 per cent, of the capital, while tho divi dends paid in 1894 by 22 out of the 25 ranged from 10 to 150 per cent. The capital issued by these 25 companies amounts to £6,554,727, and the market valuation at current quotations oil- Sep.-. tember 14th was £38,564,000 or' more than six times the amount issued. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 4 December 1895

^ .ii TO TIIE EDITOR. Sib.— In your able leader of to-day's issue of the Kalgoohlie Miner yon aro -.evidently misinformed in regard;to the Croesus North No 1. This mine originally known as Wentworth's lease lias never been adversely reported -s* upon. On the contrary all who have seen it, even in the early days when ^Kalgoorlie was stinking in the nostrils of the mining public,' have been most favorably, impressed with its value. The Croesus North, not Croesus North* No 1, was the mine adversely reportedi upon by the manager placed in charge by an English company formed to de velop it. Your remarks re this adverse report being apparently due to 'overweening self-conceit and ignor ancs of the lodes of the district ' ar; distinctly unjust. The rirst manage? placed in charge of the Croesus North, who is .well-known as a goldminer for over 20 years in Queensland and South Australia gave his opinion honestly, as you imply, but for far. different reasons to. those you imagine in your lead...

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 4 December 1895

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — In view, of the importance' to this district of a knowledge of some of the difficulties introduced into the milling of gold ores by the saline nature of the mine and lake water mostly proposed to jc used, I think the appended analysis night be of some interest to your readers. The question of cyanide extraction is considerably complicated by such water !rorn an economical point of view, though jut little chemical knowledge is requisite :o solve it. The chemical and physical characters of auriferous ores show more liversity in W.A. than in other countries, ind I am . convinced that when battery ireatmeut is found unsuited, impracticable through lack of water, or wasteful, ionsiderable attention will have to be lirected to the chemical nature of the sres, and of the available water. It may ret be found distinctly economical to use Duly condensed or Tain water for gold ore treatment. R. A. Varden, Esq., the manager of this mine, in the laboratory Df -which the ana...

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Kalgoorlie Miner — 4 December 1895

To the Editor. Sir, — In this morning's issue, you have a report on the Croesus North No. 1, in which there are discrepancies. Your mistake was in confounding the above .mine with the Croesus North. I was the hrst manager for the former mine, and Avas in charge until a few weeks back. I j have always had a very high opinion of the mine. The Croesus North was the mine that was condemned, not the Croesus North No. 1 . You stated the mine has been floated in England, whereas it is 'owliwl'by an English Exploring Co.. and is (being developed by them. ,&OTrr.m™f.,n-1- n^..-.,'- Yours, &c., % ^^IJE^UMBRAE-STEWART.
