Wattle Cultivation. II [Newspaper Article] — The Bunbury Herald and Blackwood Express — 29 October 1919

Wattle mmmu. (By 'Acacia') II Continuing the previous article, some further notes on the subject may be of interest to those upon the land who may desire to add wattle cul tivation to their other activities. The financial side of the question, of course, is the one that carries the strongest appeal. That money, and good money is to be made from wattle bark has long been recognised by farmers and others in the Eastern States, and many of them engaged in the stripping industry to a consider able extent. But they exhibited a singular improvidence and want of forethought in their operations, for while they stripped the trees they didn't plant others to take their place. The result of all this was that when nature's heritage of wattle be gan to dwindle into comparative in significance, the wattle trade suffer ed, and the Australian tanners, being unable to supply all their needs from local sources, had to begin importing The question was really a serious one, so serious indeed that the F...

Science Chats. III. GREEN FLIES, PLANT LICE AND PARTHENOGENESIS. Continued. [Newspaper Article] — The Bunbury Herald and Blackwood Express — 29 October 1919

[?] III., (By Arnold U. Henn.) GREEN FLIES, PLANT LICE AND PABTHBNOGENESIS. Continued. . AiJ. aniigftlB and plants .are- built up of minute particles .of patter called 'cells'. Really tbese are not cells, that is to say hollow boxes or cases. The word 'cell' is used for the con. tents of a cell,- just as when we speak of having a bottls; ot: wine, we are referring to the contents' and. not. to the bottle itself. Each cell is a drop let b£ photoplasm, meaning primitive br fundamental alime) or living matter lying in a small or large envelope or case of dead matter, which it has produced around itself. Each soft , cell has a' very ; .special structure, -and, the existence in it of a central kernel or nltcleuff of ' peculiarly active subs tance is the most obvious feat ure. These cells are so small that (in the case of those which build up the human body) from one to two thousand could be placed side by side on a line one inch long. They are the units which make up the body of an anima...

DEFENCE OF PETROGRAD. Copenhagen Oct. 28. [Newspaper Article] — The Bunbury Herald and Blackwood Express — 29 October 1919

OEFEHOE Of PETROIR&D. Copenhagen Oct. 28. Bolshevik newspapers announce that Krotsky is in Petrograd pre paring for the defence of the city. All theatres are closed and people are not allowed in the streets after 8 p.m. It is reported that destruc tive fires are ravaging the city. From present information the 'British official circles do not attach much importance to the reported advance of General Petlura's force, towards Odessa. Possibly his force consists of stray bands and is not sufficiently strong to interfere with General Denekin's Army to the Northward.
