Foa some time past a portion of our United I Town and Gold-felds Common has been coveted by one of her Majesty's pastoral tenants; and a little more than twelve months since the managers-. - ith few ex ceptions, w-ere wilIng to sub-let a portion of the land which had b-eea en~rlsted to heir care. But the public b'eame rather demonstrtive on the occasion, and it is not too much to say that the managers were frihtened out of the project Since then a mall party has been watching every chance to throw the management into confosion, in hopes of getting a portion of the Common orfeited, so as to place it at the service of some one who is no doubt willing to pay them for the dirty job. In £fct, one of the party has, not -vely secretly, accused another of haring received a consideration, in the shape of excessive trade advantages, for his share in the attempt. The new managers, harassed, by this clique, determined to send a deputation to represent to the late Hon. Richard Heales, the true p...

DON'T ROCK THE BABY. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 1 July 1864

DON'T ROCK THE BABY.-If all the ultimate consequences of one's acts are to be laid to his charge, the man who invented rocking-cradles for children rests under a fearful load of responsibility. The down right murder of tens of thousands of in fants, and the weakened brains of hundreds of thousands of adults, are undoubted results of this invention. To rock a child in a cradle, or to swing him in a crib, amounts tojust, this: the rapid motion dis turbs the natural flow of the blood, and pro duces stupor or drowsiness.. Can anybody suppose fora moment that such an opera tion is a healthful one ? Every one knlows the dizzy and often sickening effect of moving rapidly in a swing; yet wherein does this differ from the motion a child receives when rocked in a cradle? It is equivalent to lying in a ship-berth during a violent storm; and that sickens nine people out of ten. A very gentle, slow motion, may sometimes be soothing, though always of doubtful expediency; but to move the cradle as...

(To the Editor of the M'Ivor Times.) [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 1 July 1864

' (To the Editor of the .1'~ror Times.) Sir,-Permit me to contradict a false hood that appeared in the Newst of last eek, in its report of the special meeting of the Hospital Committee. It is therein tated that the medical officer induced ome of the Committee to get up a requi sition to have Clarke removed or to pay £3 3s. per week for Hospital expenses, and his fees additional. This is untrue. On my return from visiting C;arke-at the Hospital, I saw- some members of the Committee, and told them that about £600 worth of gold. had been sent into Heatheote that morning from Mr. Clarke's claim at Redcastle, and his eldest son, an hour or two afterwards, into the Hospital, as an object of charity. It was only after the meeting of that day I was informed, by one of the Coinmittee, of the terms on which they had decided Clarke was to remain, and they are the same as reported in the News, but emanated from the Com mittee themselves, and not from me. This decision, however, was reversed at ...

(To the Editor of the M?'ror Times.) Sir,-Permit me to contradict a state ent which appeared in. a letter signed Madame Forbes Mitchell," wherein she arges me with having commissioned Mr. Iaxfield to look after a mangle for idow Dempster. This assertion is totally evoid of truth; I never did anything of e kind. I heard, in a conversation in r. Brady's bar, Mr. Maxfield say that, he was going.to town, it would be no ouble to him to look out for a mangle. e said he would not be up for eight days, ut he would write to Mr. Brady, which e never did, nor did he write to me, he aly communicated with Mrs. Mitchell; ad if he was commissioned to puirchase .e mangle, he obtained his commission m Mrs. Mitchell. It is true that Mrs. Schell asked me to make a mangle. I ibjected to do so because I neither had the 'roper kind of seasoned timber, nor had I the right or necessary appliances for ;:tnaking a patent one, and, in my opinion, ny other sort are useless. I am, Sir, Yours &c., P. FOR...

. Ti o the Editor of the M?',or Tinmes.) ir? -Will you allow me a small space i your valuable anid-impartial journal, to ialrect an error in M3. F. Mitchell's letter, cribch appeared in your last week's issue, hierein I am said to have appealed to her ;diistress, to which I wish to make a most ephatic denial. And, Sir, at the same i'e, for fear of being thought ungrateful, ish to thank all those who so kindly .ponded to Mrs. M.itchell's efforts to cure for me the means of obtaining an Kest living for myself and family. SI regret exceedingly that so much un asantness should have happened in so y praiseworthy an object, but, as I am better off than I was before the benefit ? A wish to know, Sir, if you can do .any ing in this matter. I am told that the 1an who made the mangle can be made take it back and to refund the money. I am, Sir, Yours, &c., M. DEMPSTER.
