So much has been said and written prophesying war amongst nations with, hitherto, no results, that the more hopeful among us might ex pect the present peaceful state of things to last for a number of years. Twelve months ago things looked, we were told, as black as could be, yet they can hardly be held better now, though much changiug of sides has taken place in the mean time. With all the rumours of war of late years, the world has been very peaceful, two wars only disturbing the tranquility. Neither of these were foretold by the know-alls who are ever ready with warnings. Colliery Explosion. Fifteen Men Entombed. A piofound sensation was caused through out tbe Newcastle district on Monday when it became known that a serious explosion of gas bad taken plane at the Dudley Colliery, and that 15 ffiea Imd been entombed. The report of the explosion was distinctly heard for n distance of five miles, and hundreds of miners and other citizens from the adjoining mining; visages rushed to the scene in the hope of ascertaining the fate ofthe men, and to render any nEstatancc which might be re quired. Tbe news rapidly spread throughout the Northern distrijt. From what can be gleaned it appears tbnt tbe fan was set iu motion about 6 a.m.. and a party of 15 men dectmded the pit at 7 a.m. for the purpose of making the necessary arrangements prepar atory to th,i resumption of work un Wednes day.
