Science. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 7 September 1849

Science. MoTiVB POWER.-Count de Werdinsky has communicated to the Mining Journal, a discovery, which he believes he has made, by which a convenient, inexpensive and highly effective motive power can be ob- tained from xyloidine, or gun-cotton. He crowns this discovery by another, which he declares he made in the course of ex- periments for rendering the first efficaci- ous-nothing less than a miraculous prin- ciple by which rapid locomotion is obtain- ed without any sort of propulsion. This is his account. " I have been engaged in constructing an engine and locomotive, to be worked on the common roads by xyloi- dine, on the following plan. Small quan- tities of xyloidine are exploded successively into a copper recipient of a spheroidal form of 13 inches diameter, and £ inch strong in metal. Each separate explosion is adequate to produce, by means of' dou- ble cylinders, a complete revolution of the crank. The object of the copper recipient is merely to allow the intense gasses throw...

Advice to Emigrants. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 September 1849

Advice to Emigrants» The following extract, descriptive of the besetting sin of the colonies, will, we fear, apply equally as well to emigrants to this colony, as to those of the Cape of Good Hope. Although we believe that drinking to excess is now much less common than it was a few years since, instances of the evil and debasing habit still retaining its votaries among us, are unhappily by no means rare : " At a meeting lately held at Donches ter for the promotion of emigration, Capt. Hamilton, who said he had travelled much in every quarter of/the globe, and especially in the Cape of Good Hope, spoke in high terms of the capabilities of that colony, which he believed to be one of the best that agriculturists could go to. Truth, however, compelled him to state that the number of emigrants ruined on their arri- val in KafErland was enormous. But their ruin was to be attributed entirely to their own misconduct. Drunkenness was the ruin of the colonists. The wages that working men got...

The House of Lords. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 September 1849

The House of Lords. Their Lordships meet regularly four times a week for the despatch of public business; and beyond all doubt they do despatch, in double quick time, all that comes before them. A stranger considers himself fortunate when he obtains an or- der of admission to the gallery, to be pre- sent during a conclave of the noblest, the sagest, the discreetest, and the most ho- noured estate in the realm. He goes down to the house big with expectation. The shades of Bolingbroke, Chatham, Erskine, Grey, of all the illustrious patri- cian dead, flit before his eyes. He attunes his ears to the anticipated eloquence. He prepares his faculties for the due appreci- ation of a grand and imposing operation of combined power and wisdom. The mag- nificence of the edifice, as he enters, heightens those sentiments of awe and ve- neration with which his breast is swollen. The gorgeous purple and gold, above, be- neath him, and on every side-the deep stained windows-the sculptured and fres- ...

Miseries of an Omnibus Conductor, BY A CAD OF TEN YEARS' STANDING. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 September 1849

Miseries of an Omnibus Conductor» BY A CAD OF TEN YEARS' STANDING. It isn't pleasant, I can tell yer, to be suspended, like Mahimet's coughing, 'twixt eaven and earth all day, come bad wether come "good, come rain, snow, or ale. Neither is it quite haygreeable to have a big fist a nocking at ye, just as if a gemmen inside couldn't ax ye to stop with- out breaking the glass of your silver watch, and robbing ye of your breath. I calls it nuffin more nor less than a reg'lar buster, but people imagines, I really beleavej we have got no bowels, 'eos we're 'Bus Con- ductors; these experiments ant pleasant tho'. There's summat else two that tries us more ticklarly than another, and that's a big bull fresh from Smitheel, and as black as your hat, which comes behind you, and sharpens his 2 horns on the soft part of your 2 calf, and the pelissman axes you, as cool as Joseph Heyday, if ye're goin to stick there all day ? just as if you were a mutton pie, and was only made to be toss- ed for. Draining the Mines of the Sierra Morena. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 September 1849

Draining the Mines of the Sierra Morena« An English company have leased the celebrated silver mines of Guadacanal, near Seville, in Spain, which have been under water for a period of 150 years. Before that time they produced to the Spanish Government £100,000 per annum in du- ties alone, and from the proceeds of these the palace of the Escurial was built. They were the property of the Euchara, rich contractors, who, not satisfied 'with the enormous wealth they derived from them, secretly took away the ores from a new lode they discovered without giving notice to the Government, and, to prevent im- prisonment and confiscation, they let the water into the mine, and for 150 years they have remained in the state in which they were thus left by them. About six months ago, however, the mines were purchased by an English com- pany on most advantageous terms, and a capital of £10,000 was raised among a few English adventurers, in order to work them-Mr. Nicholas Harvey, of Hayle, who drained ...

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. "Vox populi, vox Dei." FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1849. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 September 1849

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. "Voxpopuli, vox Dei." ^RIDAYrSEPTEMBERlïïA "WE are happy to report that the new line of road between Perth and Guildford, which has been for some time in progress, is ra- pidly approaching completion, at least so far as clearing is concerned. The advan- tage of this Une over the old is great, as it not only avoids the long drag of Barndon's Hill, but it will also require much less out- lay in making it what may be called a ser- viceable road, and not a mere sand track. By what means that desirable end is to be accomplished, we are not aware ; various methods have been recommended, such as macadamising it, or laying it with blocks of wood. With regard to the former, a sufficiency of materiel is close at hand, but it appears that the tenders sent in to the Government for carting it on to the line, were too extravagant to be accepted ; we hear, however, that the settlers who are most interested in securing a good road team-owners-would, if solicited, furnish th...

The Cockroach. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 September 1849

The Cockroach. The family Blattae, to wbich the cock- roach (B. orientalis) belongs, is a very nu- merous and a very voracious one ; and I first got acquainted with the species on shipboard, during a long voyage to the East. The insect is of a reddish brown colour, with a body about an inch and a third long, and antennae somewhat longer, making the entire animal about three in- ches. Those who have not seen an entire specimen, may have noticed portions of its legs and wings amongst the brown su- gar in daily use, as it is fond of sweets and happens sometimes to get entombed amongst its food. On first leaving Eng- land, being winter, not a trace of the insect was observed, but as we drew near the tro- pics, a few in the evenings began to make their appearance. These had evidently been dormant in their hiding places during the many months the vessel lay in dock, and re-animated by the increased warmth now issued forth to resume their predatory habits. Objects of observation and intere...

COLONIAL INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 September 1849

COLONIAL INTELLIGENCE. BY the arrival of the .Overland mail from King George's Sound, on Wednesday, we learn the Hawk, from S. Australia, was at Cape Biche, and we have been kindly fa- vored with some late S. Australian jour- nals received by her ; they are unusually barren of general intelligence, but such as they contain we have the pleasure of lay- ing before our readers. The English intelligence by this oppor- tunity is not up to so late a date as that we have before published. SOUTH AUSTBALIA. Mr. Lawrence had been admitted as a practitioner in the Supreme Court. THE RAILWAYS.- The South Australian public are likely to be benefited by squab- blings which ought never to have taken place, so far as the capitalists are concern- ed. Two distinct companies are now ef- fectively in the field, one intending to go from North-terrace to the present shipping place, by Albert Town, and the other, which, without avowing its intended line, clearly enough proposes to go by the North Arm.
