THE STORY OF "The Bull Pen." A TRAGIC PAGE of WORKING-CLASS HISTORY As told by THOMAS A. HICKEY, Socialist Labor Party Organiser, in the New York People. CHAPTER IX. (Continued). [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 7 July 1900

THE STORY OF 'The Bull Pen.' A TRAGIC PAGE of WORKING-CLASS HISTORY As told by THOMAS A. HlCKEY, Socialist Labor Party Organiser, in the New York People. CHAPTER IX. (Continued). Steunenberg's scheme was ably seconded by Governor Smith, of of Montana, who had been elec ted on a straight Populist ticket, and who, when the . men were fleeing from the county after Apiil 29, gave instructions to his otlicials to allowthe Idaho author ities to come in across the State line and arrest any union miners the wanted, without extradition papers, or any of the legal me thods pursued in such cases, ithns trampling on the State Constitu tion he had sworn to uphold. In five different towns in Mon tana his- orders were carried out, and the unfortunate union men were dragged back to the Bull Pen without any warrant of law. How true it is that the desire to gain the political control in the county moved Stuenenberg to act so, may be seen from the fact that a Populist mine doctor testi fied to the fak...

Voices of the Air. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 7 July 1900

Voices of the Air. The voice of the ages, seems haunting the air. Like waitings of spirits, in torment, despair. Hopelessly calling ; — The cry is appalling, — The echoes of centuries unjust and unfair. The voice of the workers — the honest and true Beseeching the masters, the covetous few, — The cunning, the greedy, Oppressing the needy— 'he wails of the victims like grnu ghost3 pursue. ' Six. days shalt thou labor,' was spoken to all, | The selfish — the crafty, ignoring the call, They strut forth as spoi To plunder the toilers, — Grown mighty in loot, they bind labor in thrall. Injustice to labor and robbing the meek — Gross frauds on the masses, o'erburden the weak, ! The State, deaf, unheeding When Labor is pleading, Though rulers lend ears, if exploiters speak. Ah ! Woe to producers— the usefu ndjust, Doomed victims of spoil and of covet ous lust, J If workmen oppose — Then militia o'erthrows, 'fill tho ragged revoltors are biting the dust 1 | How long, O Lord, and how long sh...

EDITORIAL TALK. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 7 July 1900

EDITORIAL TALK. Th« great burde . that sits heavily on the shoulders of The People management is that of Finance. And it is both heavy and Berious. It is I true that the paper is in a better financial position than ever before ; and it is likewise true that it stands as the leader of econo mic thought in ihe world of Labor journalism. But there are few even in the Socialist movement (I doubt if there are any.) who have any adequate conception of the strain that is— and must be for many months to come — placed on the individual whose duty it is t make an income of say £10 do the work of £20 This is not a wail. The People doesn't weep over its financial worries. We compa e the present with the past, and glory in the progress that has been made. But there are on our books many pounds of subscribers' dues tha' would, it at once paid in, give im~ mediate relief to ou.- ehattere lerves, ease considerably the in cesBent financial strain, and make possible the production of a far more reada...
