The wharf at Sandridge was crowded with the friends of the departing ones. The exodus consists of all ranks and profesions, and Victoria will be pretty wall represented in that iunhappy island, which' iill no doubt soon be made the scene of future wars with di-contented natives. The elections for the variousprovince are beginning now to attract more attention, partly from the fact of the returning oficer for the Central Province having committed a very stupid mistake in bil dutfii3 sad it is folly expected that considerable difficulties will arise therefrom. VIOLET TOWN POLICE COURT. Monday, Aug. 22. (Before Mr Gall.) [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 26 August 1870

VIOLET TOWN POLICE COURT. Monday, Aug. 22. (Before Mr Gall.) Constable Riordan charged a man with being drunk and disorderly, and he was fined 5s. R. Small was charged with resisting and assault- ing Constable Riordan in the execution of this duty. It transpired that Small, who was in the company of the first defendant on Sunday, the 21st, endeavoured to prevent the officer arresting him, and struck him a blow in the face. Mr Gall said that it was necessary to protect the police in such places, and sentenced the defendant to three months' imprisonment in Beechworth Gaol ; and Patrick Gilroy, who did not assault the officer, but certainly from the evidence incited Small to resist his apprehension, got off with a fine of 20s. The man Small is a mason, and was in the employ of Mr Crocker, engaged in putting up a stone wall, got drunk, struck the policeman, and we think the sentence altogether too severe. Nothing was known against the prisoner pre- viously. Had Mr Gall inflicted a fine o...

The Bench decided to hear the case, which being proved by Mr Brown, judgment was given for the complainant for £17 15s, with £1 6s costs. Mr. O'Leary applied for immediate execution.   The Bench inquired on what grounds imme- diate execution was asked for. TO THE EDITOR OF THE BENALLA ENSIGN. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 26 August 1870

TO THE EDITOR OF' THE BENALLA ENSIGN. Sir,--- In one of your leading articles in last week's issue, commenting upon "amimadversions" made relative to the levels taken by the Shire Engineer in the township, and threatening a "day of reckoning" for those who have indulged in them, I, as their mouthpiece in the Council, feel myself called upon to take it to myself. I am   quite prepared to do so, and stand the " reckon- ing,", notwithstanding Mr Thonpson's report. My objection to the manner in which the   Shire Engineer has been laying out the drainage of the township was simply based upon the fact that there is a fall from south to north in Nunn- street, and that consequently the drainage should go in that direction, instead of, as now, from north to south. Mr.Thompson's report confirms my opinion, for he admits " that there is a fall of two feet from south to north" ; but by a curious species of argument he endeavours to prove that Mr Brown is right. Now, if...
