MELBOUllNE, /fpnosr 01m own coueerpondentO ^February 12, 1875. I' cannot say that I have very much to tell you of momoiit, beyond tho fact that wo have been passing through a reason of such heat and drought as no white man has experienced in Victoria for the last twenty years. It has been found necessary to put.white niglitr. caps upon the horses in cabs and coachcs, to save tlicm from suu-strokc. However, we have had two of the heaviest 'downpours of rain, on Thursday and yesterday, which wp havo had for many a day. As may bo seen hy tlie report of the meeting of the Municipal Council in this issue, it Las been 'proposed to take up tlie blocks that have just been laid in tho gutters of Lachlan-street, as tlio flow of water down River-street- is found to be highly objectionable. We have all along, in public and private, endeavored to propagate the axiom that water diroctod down a steep bank will melt and. wear away our Riverine soil as if it were sugar, and leave a I dangerous steep sided chasu), which will in crease in length with every hoavv shower. and that this excoriating process cannot bo stopped cxcept at considerable expense — that is, where water in quantity has to bo dealt with. Notwithstanding, the drainage of a large portion of Lachlan-street, was turned down River-street, and the recent rains made plain what may be expcctcd unless something be done. At first sight, the only remedy seemed to be to undo the work already done and do it over again on' another plan, but it cannot be agre...
