GORDON SHIRE. Recruiting Campaign. Conscription Favored. [Newspaper Article] — Northern District Standard — 20 January 1916

GORDON SHIRE. Recruiting Campaign. Conscription Favored. At the Gordon Shire Council meeting yesterday, the President (Cr Barnes) reported in connection with the re cruiting scheme that he had called a public meeting and that a recruiting committee had been formed, and all necessary work put in hand. Cr Coutts said that lie had been speaking to Mr Angus, M.P, in con nection with the matter, and that he (Mr Angus) was willing to assist in every way possible to make the scheme in this district a success. The Secretary reported that Recruit ing Sergeant King had arrived in Boort. Cr Malone said that he was strongly in favor of conscription. It seemed to be the only right thing to do. He thought that compulsory service must come in the c.id, but befcre he would move a resolution to that eHect the present recruiting scheme should be given a fair trial. Fifty thousand men was a big number to raise, but the country was pledged to it and they must be obtained. The President : Conscription m...

PEOPLE WE KNOW. Rev H. Richardson. [Newspaper Article] — Northern District Standard — 20 January 1916

PEOPLE WE KNOW. Rev H. Richardson. The Rev.. H. Richardson, of the Boort Methodist Church, is a decided acquisition to the town and district. Me is a man possessing sterling qualities, and his voice has more than once been heard on the public platform. He has a well-informed mind, instructive and educational to a degree, and he lias done much in. moulding public opinion throughout the district. As a public speaker lie is splendid ; his material is well arranged, the natural result being a comprehensive statement on the topic under review. 1 Ie is a power ful preacher, and has done and is doing good work in cementing and building up the Methodist Church throughout the district. Me is a useful citizen of the town—a nian who understands the full meaning of the word "citizenship." Let us hope that his stay with us will be a lengthy one—the town will be all the better for his presence. Me began his ministry at Brighton, Victoria. During his stay a new parsonage was erected at Brighton an...

AS IT WAS. or Reminiscences of Early Wedderburn. [BY A PIONEER] (Continued from previous issue) [Newspaper Article] — Northern District Standard — 20 January 1916

AS IT WAS. or Reminiscences of Early Wedder burn. [By a Pioneer] (Continued from previous issue) Promising as the prospect seemed it could not lessen our intention of returning to Karong:- indeed, we somewhat regretted being unex pectedly absent so long. We had evidence for our faith in its arifer ous quality and longed to be again among the diversified beauties of hill and dale and with the kindly folk we left there. So, bidding our young friend good luck we cheerily trudged off on a bee track for home. I believe there are still those in Wedderburn who knew the persons whose names appear in this sketch. Will Perryman remained on Jones's Creek, Tarnagulla, until Sandy Creek was opened and was there very fortunate. He returned to his home place, Adelaide, engaged in business but came back when Inglewood was discovered by the brothers Thompson. He remained in Inglewood a few years, then came on to Wedderburn, where, as partner with John Cunliffe, he worked a rich surface claim on the ...

Wool Sales. The Australian Mercantile Land and Finance Go. Ltd. report :—The second series opened in Melbourne on Monday, 17th insl., alter an in terval of five wceksv We held our first sale on Tuesday, the 18th, when we offered a catalogue of 3G19 bales, of which sold, in cluding private sales since our last auction 3282 bales. The Man on the Land. Cultivation. [Newspaper Article] — Northern District Standard — 27 January 1916

>C-^ ■ >;«; si The Man on the Land. H WV*.***-<>* I*.*.* *s;o Practical Irrigation Farming, j Cultivation. In irrigation farming, no lessthaii in the production of crops under or dinary "dry" conditions, cultivation is more than half the business. It is possible to apply w»tcr NVllh th° greatest regularity and care, and yet to have only disappointing re sults. . . i Water, therefore, .is not the only essential. Something more is want ing and that something is the tillage of the soil in such a way as to (i) conserve moisture, whether applied by the clerk of the weather or by the most experienced irrigator, and (=) to improve its quality. In the articles under the above heading by the Organising Inspec tor of the Agricultural Bureau, one of the most important sections is that in which lie discusses this sub ject. He reminds us once that when soil is allowed to set after rain or irrigation, moisture is rapidly evaporated. In other words, as surfacc moisture is drawn...

FREEDOM OR ENSLAVEMENT! Which Shall It Be? MEN AND MEANS WANTED [Newspaper Article] — Northern District Standard — 27 January 1916

FREEDOM OR ENSLAVEMENT! Which Shall It~ Be ? MEN AND MEANS WANTED Though tlicrc has been nn agree able response from the Korong Vale and Wedderburn districts during the past couple of weeks it is noticeable lint the general enlist ment Vhroiifj'vout the country is low er tliPi ' nii^i. be oxpee;cd, and it. is hardly fair to think that this is due to the malady known as "cold feet"; rather would it appear to be due to j failure in realising the real serious ness of the situation; this is eviden ced by the everyday talk that one hears in the street, where, of course, all manners of sentiment is express ed and where every spokesman is an authority on some or every phase of the great war, which alone baffles the genius of the big minds of the nations, who are equipped with all the information the changing situ ations and a vast lnteligcnce organ ization can give them.
