We have heard lately how juries wrangle about their verdict': now listen to a Devon shire etory. - A. doctor in B. ?— — caused the' death of an old woman through giving wrong ' drugs. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE IN AUCKLAND. We are sorry to 'have to record another very se rious fire as having ocourred on the 9th instant in WakeBeld'Street, resulting in the destruction of no -less than eight tiOubbs, and unfortunately most of the property contained in them. The -fire broke: out atabout ten. minutes to 2 o'clock, in the bake house ^belonging toMr.Corlev, in Wakefield-street. AimoBt immediately fallowing this. the whole bake house was in a blaze,' -and the alarai bells were rung, and beyond a comparatively small quantity of flour and a trifle of furniture the destruction was. most complete. The bakery, which was the pro perty -of Mr. Walters, was a brick building and uninsured. Wilson's grocery and general store -next took fire,: being next door to the bakery. This, was a wooden building and contained a great quan tity of groceries, &c. The whole thing, burnt Jike a box of matches, and but a very little was saved. THE HtTGH PECE LOTTERY. A' mjHBER, some twenty or so, of the ticket holders in Mr. Hugh [Peck's *' Art Union Distribution of Freehold Properties,' met at bis invitation, given by advertisement, at his office, on Thursday, to hear from htm a state mant of the steps he proposed to take in settlement of their claims. Mr. Peck in formed those present lhat Is5s reason for calling them together, was to make four propositions to them. It would be for them 'to decide w'aich xhey would agree to, and «n the other hand, if they accoptefl none t/t ihem, there was but one course left for him. The first that he would make was that they should give him five years to pay their claims in full, and if they did that, he would bear the whole of the loss sustained by his 'persecution ' by the Attorney* General.
