JAVA. THE DuTCn TELEGRAPH CABLE.-The Singa pore Free Press of May 3, says :-" The steamer has returned from examniningthe telegraph cable between Singapore and Bunka. The cable was ascertained to have been damaged in several places. It was also found that where.it passes over patches of coral it was beginning to get embedded in the coral. ITALY. [Newspaper Article] — Examiner — 23 June 1860

ITA Y. WmHIL within the; new' kiigdom of.'Italy all is harmony and activity, without all'is confusion and alarm. A fearful insurrection has broken out in Sicily, and although the "authorities" have beaten it down by sheer force of artillery th'e re sistance was formidable and intrepid, and the spirt in which it originated is as fierce as before. The young King of Naples, reduced to a state of frenzy or of mortal fear, it is not easy to de termine which, is carrying his reign of terror to so fearful a height that all friendly remon strances are thrown away upon him, and -the total collapse of his dynasty is the only issue itis possible to forsee. In Rome matters are quite as bad. The students again broke out on the ad vent of Garibaldi's day, acp succeeded in mak ing a demonstration in favor of annexation to Piedmont. On a subsequent occasion a horri ble butchery of the Romans on the Corso by the Pontifical troops took place under circumstances which have awakened a universal feeling ...

DISCOVERY OF A FOSSIL HAND AT THE FISH RIVER CAVES. [Newspaper Article] — Examiner — 23 June 1860

Discovery of a fossil hand at the Fish River Caves. -Writing to the 'Bathurst         Free Press,' from Glynday, Fish River, Creek     on the 11th instant,- Charles Waylan says :-  The week before last I accompanied a few friends to examine the new cave, of which an account was given some time ago in your journal. We left home about 10 in the morn- ing and arrived at the Coach House Cave at two. After taking some refreshment we pro-   ceeded at half-past two for the entrance. We entered safely, and contimued our search until eight o'clock. Hard work indeed! As I       entered the third grotto. I observed a dark   spot on the floor, my companions had gone ahead.
