Send-off to Mr. M. Goodman. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

Send-off to Mr. M. Goodman. As a farewell to Mr. M. Goodman, on Tuesday, March 1, a number of friends and well-wishers, who were desirous of recognising his worth as a citizen, and as a tribute of the respect in which he was held by the residents of the; district for his many sterling qualities, entertained him at a banquet in the Assembly Ha 1 of the Commercial Hotel, just prior to hi s departure from the district at a very early hour on the following morning* Mr. Goodman was a townsman tnat any small community couiu m-auuiu iu lose, and the good-feeling that. existed towards him was fully manifested in the large gathering of all classes of the community, and general regret was expressed that the time had arrived when we could no longer have the pleasure of seeing his genial and smiling old face amongst us. However, we feel satisfied that we can with confidence say that he carries away with him the good wishes for his future happiness of every resident in the district whose good wi...

NOTICE. Those who asked me questions in Jewish law, cus toms, and philosophy, (about 25 questions in all) I will answer in the next Hebrew Standard. 7'hose to whom I should have sent answers by letters, will receive them next week. Many ask questions in Kabale and philosophy who have not learned anything in these subjects at all. They want me to teach them what they never learned, and that I cannot do by letters. It takes a long time to learn with hard study. I beg people of such a stamp not to ask any more questions. Those who have learned, and wish to ask questions may do so by a personal interview as I wrote in my first article. Questions concerning the cifference between Judaism and Christianity, I will not answer. But I can answer any question at any time which pertains to Judaism as I wrote in my first article. — Rabbi Isidor Bramson, 683 George-st., Sydney. nD3 by 'wo RUM, a Special Line for the coming season. 45/ (net) dozen. Uncovering the Head. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

Uncovering the Head. In the Jewish ' Chronicle 'we read that Mr. Charles Harrison, M.P., died from a chill contracted at the funeral of Sir Frank Lockwood, which he attended the day before. He succumbed to laryngitis after an illness of only fonr hours, and it is believed that the fa*al result maybe attributed to his having stood at thfi orarvpt wit.Tt nnrnwrp; h&nr\ If ernVh V»p fho aofnai cause of his death, Mr. Harrison is not the first victim by many to the custom which obtains at Christian funerals of standing bareheaded in the graveyard in winds and weathers. The custom of uneovering the head in the open air for any length of time in either extreme of temperature— extreme cold or extreme heat — is always attended with danger. In the latter case sunstroke may ensue. Jewish funerals are, for tunately, free from all such risk, Jewish custom requiring the hea ' to be covered at all religions cere monies The fact is worth commenting upon, bearing mind that there are those w...

The Consumptive Home. To the Editor of the " Hebrew Standard." [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

The Consumptive Home. To the Editor of the ' Hebrew Standard.' Dear Sir, — I have been appealed to this week in connection with the Thirlemere Home for Consump tives, and as I have noticed in the columns of the ' Standard ' various fetes and bazaars in aid of the Queen Victoria Home for Consumptives, will you lend your asiistance in laying before the Executive of the Fund, that it is considered one of the first charges they may be anticipated to bear, is the assistance to that well-khown establishment at Picton. It only requires %? the case being argued publicly to prove that in the scheme it is practible to take up the Thirlmere Home. Apologising for trespassing on your space. Yours respect! ully, A.F.

Penalties. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

Penalties. 1 he penalty of popularity is envy. The penalty of thin shoes is a cold. The penalty of a tight boot is corns. The penalty of marrying is a mother-in-law. The oenaltv of a pretty cook is an empty larder. The penalty of a godfather is a silver knife, fork and Spoon. The penalty of interfering between man and wife is abuse, frequently accompanied with blows from both. The penalty of buying cheap clothes is like going to law — the certainty of losing your suit and having to pay for it. The penalty of remaining single is having no one who cares a button for you, as abundantly proved by the state of your shirts. ' I never heard of . but one perfect boy,' said Johnnie, pensively, as he sat in the corner doing penance. :i And who was that ?' asked Mamma. 'Papa — when he was little,' was the answer; and silence reigned for the space of five minutes.

English and Foreign Jews. To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

English and Foreign Jews. To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard. Dear Sir — I was much pained to read in vour valuable journal of disagreements between brethren, of heart-burnings and of uncomplimentary expressions, that are foreign to the spirit of Judaism, and do violence to, that charity and brotherly consideration which should actuate a Jew. The Rabbis preach in glowing terms of this doctrine of brotherly love or charity, and to make that teaching effective, I should ay from their inaffectiveness to smooth these matters over, that to make their teaching effective they should be careful to practice that which they preach. When they fail to do this they sow the seed of scepticism, and the sermons become an external show, without any deep seated principles. These feelings of discontent in a community, are like the tongue which needs the strongest kind of curb to keep it from doing violence to a reputation or wounding kindly feeling. To. the contending writers under this heading, I s...

Inter - Marriages. To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

Inter -Marriages. To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard. Dear Sir — Many write s in contributing their -l effusions ' to the columns of the Standard, under the heading of ' Proselytism,' seem to overlook the stand point in the discussion, i.e. that alliances are occurring daily in direct oppositipn to the teachings of. home training, even apart from the traditions of Judaism. The fact is that young people will not be content to remain unmarried when thrown into one anothers com pany. The fault is they are allowed to mingle to opportunity of Jewish association is very rare. But Jews are 'gregarious animals ' and will marry, and hence it often happens that ardent youth and timid old age are alike ' taken in ' by the artfulness of the dangerous sex, of which. Mr. Weller. senior pro phetically declared of old, it lures, its craftness, and its success. And yet after all why do not more marriages take place ? Simply because home training has been a check to inter- marriage. Until recently,...

New Charities. To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

New Charities. To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard. Dear Sir — I cannot agree with the remarks of several gentlemen who 'rule' our constitutional Jewish phiiantrophic organizations, in their attempt to crush the newly formed charitable associations. With a varied European experience, I am of opinion, that in the ? spontaneous growth of these societies may be seen a neglect to ' weed the garden.' Judaism teaches us from first to last the beauties of charity, but its many lessons frequently fail to make that impression upon the mind that they should. At the ' Home ' meeting the Rev. J. H. Landau echoed the Rev. A, B. Davis in that money spent on wreaths at graves should he sent to that Institution, and the names of the donors advertised as an inducement. This is surely not the spirit in which the donors, who have usually sent wreaths, intended their tributes to be viewed. The principle I take it is, that true charity or alms giving is from the heart, not from the hand. From a love of...

Troubled. Nobody saw me do it, Nobody came that way, .,. ' When I found the box on the clo?et shelf t Where the cakes for supper lay. Nobody told me not to, Nobody knows but myself, But, O 1 1 wish that cake I took Was back on the ehelf . Nobody knows my trouble, Nobody ever would guess That a cake could cause a little girl So much unhappiness. Nobody can tell mothev Who took it from the shelf — But I know before I go to sleep, I'll have to tell her myself. — Ella Randall Pearce. The telephone number at the Great Synagogue Chambers, is 2765. Jews appear to be as prominent in journalism as in other walks of life in South Africa. Even Rhodesia has its Jewish editor in Mr. Louis Abrahams, Editor of the ' Gwelo Times,' whose marriage with Miss A* Kirschbaum has been announced.

Zionism a Century Ago. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

Zionism a Century Ago. Rabbi A. Blum writing in the American Hebrew calls attention to an extract from the 'Neglected Memoirs upon the Jews,' . by the Prince ot Ligny, bearing the date of 1797 : — After having traced to the Christian States their duties and explained unto them their interests in regard to the amelioration of the condition of the Jews of Europe, he prophecies what will happen in case they ignore his counsel. In that hypothesis he falls back upcn the Turks; it is from them that must come salvation to the sorely -tried race But his ethnographical notions being rather confused he imagined that ' there was the greatest analogy between that people and the Turks. The Turks, says he, are only Jews, very clean, well dressed and wearing a turban. Are any proofs necessary? First of all they don't look upon the Jews as dogs, as they like to call us } then most of their names are identical, Mahomed comes from Moses, Soliman from Salomon, . Ibrahim from Abraham, Jussuf from Josep...
