THE BURNLEY CONSPIRACY. . TRIAL OF MR. HALLIDAY. Mn. HALLIDAr and others, charged with con spiracy at Burnley, appeared in the dock at the Manchester Assizes yesterday morning. Mr. Pope, for the prosecution, said that after the disagreement of the jury, he hoped it would not be necessary the matter should pro ceed further. The, course he suggested was that the indicment should stand over, and that the defendants might be liberated upon their: recoguisucse to come up at the next assies, if called upon. DISCOVERY OF A NEW COALFIELD IN SOUTH STAFFORD. [Newspaper Article] — Miners' Advocate and Northumberland Recorder — 17 June 1874

DISCOVERtY OF A NEW COAL.FIELD IN SOUTH STAFFORD. GnEAT excitement was created at Birmingham Ekclihange to-day by the posting of a. notice from the engineer of the Sandwell 'Park Colliery Company, announcing the discovery of a seam of coal two feet thick. The imun portance of this announcement was such as to make it the subject ofcongratulation. Sinking has been going on at Sandwell on Earl Dart mouth's estate for sewar?l months, £20,000 havinj been already expended in the prospect of finding an immense now coal-field, which should take the place of the exhausted measures of South Stafford. For some time hope was given up of any result being obtained, but to-day's discovery is regarded as highly satisfactory. If workable coal is found at Sandwell, the existance of a very extensive virgin coal-field is believed to be demonstrated, and Birmingham will have a.tew stimulus to her staple industries. Tin bustles, holding a gallon of whilky, can be purchased by buffalo ladies who want to s...

PAINFUL EVICTION CASES. [Newspaper Article] — Miners' Advocate and Northumberland Recorder — 17 June 1874

PAINFUL EVICTION CASES. WE extinct the following from items of home intelligence. We lately spoke of the sum mary dismissal from the English dockyards of skilled artizans, who were practically driven from the shores of their country -to strange lands. We now see how the pick of her agricenltural labourers are being dealt with after long years of faithful and ill-paid ser vices, and are swelling the tile of emigration. In old times men left their country for their country's good, but England is making amends by expatiating her worthy sons. We trust, however, that those torn from their native and acestral sioil with such a rude hand will find homes of freedomn and plenty across the seas. : The 2alncdhester Guardian reporter at New market, writing upon the subject of the lock out of agricultural ]abourers, which has caused such distress there, says:-Some painful incidents of this unhappy dispute came under miy notice during a walk along the Station road. At the jnndtion of the road wit...
