Wfitcijir Mta tine Uteris mort est, BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16. We have now completed a work which twelve monilis ago was considered an impracticable and foolish idea. Of course wo allude to the publication of a weekly newspaper in the Mitchell dis trict. We Btartcd under all 6orts of difficulties and with a strong party to oppose us ; we incurred a heavy expen diture without the sure hope of satisfac tory returns; and altogether embarked upon a hazardous enterprise without any other support than that afforded us by a few of tho business people in Blackall, and several station holders and managers. As soon, however, as we commenced the publication of the paper it was every where favorably noticed and received until wc were enabled to place upon our list not only one but several subscribers from every station in the Mitchell dis trict excluding three. Wc have en deavored during the past twelve months to act up to the principles wo enunciated at the outset, and though wo may have el...

Sports at Tambo. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 16 June 1880

Sports at Tambo. ON tiic Queen's Birthday the Taraboitcs turned out to witness tlic athletic sports held on Uic flat across tlio river. Tlio entries were not so numerous ai was anticipated, but it is to be hoped by-and-by persons will patronise raid take more interest in future meetings of the kind. The Handicap proved a great success, and Uic close finish showed the handicappcr's (Mr. J. Bretion) superior skill, as the several competitors had never met before, with the exception of Crossthwaite and Goffngc, so therefore it was rather diffi cult to handicap them. Crossthwaitc won the Handicap, scoring 12 points, and Goffagc and M'Donough divided the second and third prize, being equal nine points each. Mr. Crossthwaitc met with an accident while vaulting after be had won the event. His elbow caught the pole, which threw liim on to his aim, breaking the small bone, but now he has quite recovered. BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. June 4. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 16 June 1880

BBISBANE AFFAIBS. FROM OUB BPECIA-L COEUI58POKDENT. June 4. X AM writing on the day that was at this time last year such a fata! one to the local traders. One used to bear wlifcpcrri Iwforc hnnd that So-and-so could hardly got over it, and after it was over men used to nlmkc tlicir heads and say, " By jove! tliero has been a heavy Fourth." The l«st proof of the gene ral improvement in commercial affairs is the comparative indifference with which the day is now received. The shopkeepers say that business is dull-but only just as a matter of course. Whilo on commercial topics I hear of a station sale, by Wilson Bros. The Aramac Meeting. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 16 June 1880

The Axamao Meeting. THE annual race carnival of our Aram tic friends appears to luive bean a successful one, and we sincerely regret having been unable to personally report the running, pressure of business compelling us to deny ourselves the treat to which we had been looking forward for the last twelve months. From private sources, however, wc gather a few items of particulars which may be interesting to our readers. The morning of the 8rd June brake fair, and horse owners' hopes ran high. The main street soon presented a scene of buttle and activity, and among the busy throng it was cosy to discern the pilots who are so essentially necessary to bring to a succcseful issue that thoroughly English pastime which has been denominated the sport of longs. Eager, wizen-faced, little men hurried to and fro with a look of care on their brows, as if the fate of nations depended on the success of their efforts, while cheeky, undersized youths, bearing unmistakably the stamp of the Australia...
