THE NATIVE INSURIECTION IN NEW CALEDONIA. -The s.s. Gunga arrived at Sydney on 'Wednesday from Nonmer with dates to "the 21st inst. The Herald correspond ent writes : ' The place thrills with the news that in the beginoning of this week 11 more were added to the list of victims. Again has over confidence in the black demons been the snare. Three small coasters were engaged to carry pro visions and ammunition to the military force under the command of Colonel Wendling, operating aeainst the rebels in the north at Pays, Adie, &o. Amongst the 11 men composing the three crews was n man nnmed Marianne, whose son was killed in the massacre at Monsieur Houdaille's. This man, so far as a perfect acquaintaince with their language, manners, rand cu-toms, was as a native lhmself. He hIad served for years as interpreter on any required occasion through an extensive district, and amongst many tribes. He seemed, in spite of the loss of his son, to have scorned the idea that the blacks wnu...

CALFORNIA MAIL NEWS. FRitM TIIE AGE. It is santisfactory to bA able to state that the insurrection in Bosnia is over. and that the Austrian occupation is an accomplished fact. The Russians are evacuatinir European Tukey, the British fleet has left Turkish waters, and the aspect of affaire in Europe is more peaceful than it was a fortnight igo. A Legislative Council, consiating of British officers and native notables, has been appointed for Cyprus. Bu' the condition of affairs both in Turkey and Ris ia is as bad as can lie. The paper money at Constantinople is not worth more than one-fourth of its nominal value, and in some distriots the troops have not received tiny pay for two years. Albania is in a state of insurrection, and disaffection exists everywhere throughout European Turkey. Meanwhile the condition of affairs in Russia is very little better; and between the Nihiliis on one side and the Panslayists on the other, the position of the Emperor is anything lhu enviable. Til? extraordinary gullibility of some neoploe even in this enlightened ago is wonderful, as instance the case of the fortune-teller Cora, who has been orey irg upon the credulity of a woman for some time past, and has succeeded in fleecing her victim out of some £20 for the purpose of, as she asserted, breaking her viotim's bad planet; and the saying that the world is peopled by rogues and fools celtainly contains some truth in it. This woman, who is a gipsy, has been for some months, it is reported, making a good living out of hot dupes, and when wanted for this lnst affair was arrested as she left the Ballarat gaol, where she had been ino.trceisted for a month for the same sort of game in the gold township. One hardly knows whiolc deserves the greatest punishment, the rogue or the fool, in such, cases, for if there were not plenty of the latter it would. be utterly impossible for th...
