It is well known that whiie Speaker of the House of Representatives, in 19-49.General Packer, th« Democratic candidate for Governor, contributed very materially by his influence toward the enactment of that now popular measure known as the "Three Hundred Dollars Exemption Act." During the winter of 1855, it will be remembered, astrenuou * effort was made by person who fannied themselves aggrieved by the law, to have it repealed. Gen. Packer was then in the Senate, where he at once took lead among thilse who opposed a repeal. A remonstrance _against the law, numerously signed by his own constnuents, being forwarded to him to present to that body, he complied with the request accompanying it with the remarks which we* print below, and which the Philadelphia Sun when publishing them, at ihe time, prefaced as philanthropic, just and truly Democratic."
