Gideon Wells: On the morning of the 16th, we, came over to Yazoo river, to be ready to co-operate with Gen. Grant, leaving two ot bur ironclads at Bed river, one at Grand Gulf, one at Carthage, three at-Warrentbwn, and two in the Yazoo, which left me a small force still I disposed of them! to the best advantage. On the 18th, at noon, the firing heard in the rear of Vickeburg assured me Gen. -Grant -was approaching the city.
