AMUSEMEHTS- For the past three months our theatrea and other places of amusement have been unusually successful , and yet no extraordinary attractions were offered to induce such crowded ! assemblages aa each night gathered at theatres , concerts , he . The cause of . this success can be only attributed to the vast numbers of strangers with which our city has heen filled since the opening of the Crystal Palace . This out-side population having , seen the elephant , and having been satisfied with its huge proportions , has quietly • returned to the places from whence it came , thns leaving the regular inhabitants to their vtual domestic quiet and solitute . The theatres , in consequence , were the first to feel this falling off in our population , and consequent falling off in the treasury . BOCTLTON PHILIPS AND ARTHUR AKERS * ( BOTH OF BIBMIHOHAM ) . —This match of 140 yards , Akers giving three yards start , for £ 10 a sido , was to haire come off on Tuesday , the 85 thiof last month , at the Bell , at Northficld , bnt , owing to a suspicion tjiat all was not right , the referee refused to act unless the men then ran for the stakes only , he declaring all bets off . QUOITS . B OARDMAN AND H ODSON . —Mr . Editor : The great quoitingmatch forthe Championship and £ 50 , between old John Boardman , the renowned quoit player of Salford , and Mr . Hodson of Staleyhridge , came on on Monday last , at the Paul Pry Tavern , Broughton-Road , Salford . The game was 61 shots up , 18 yards , 6-inch quoits . The betting at the commencement was 6 to 4 on Hodson , which was taken freely . The game was begun by Boardman getting thefirst shot . A change then took place , and Hodson chalked 14 to Boardman \ s 5 . The betting was now 2 to 1 on Hodson , with a few takers . Hodson still led , and scored 22 to Boardman s 12 . At this time Boardman wanted 4 to 1 that he scored 41 before his opponent .
