DONT BE DECEIVED . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 9 April 1896

DONT BE DECEIVED . T HERE are two or three catch-words that are used by gold monometallists to deceive unwary friends of silver . Some of the latter who desire to be and to appear entirely candid and especially to avoid anything like repudiation are perplexed by these words or . phrases . One of these is parity , as we have before explained . It is misleading in the use made of it by one who is at least a gold monometallic , because he always means by it that silver coin must be evened up and never intends that gold shall be levelled down . The true bimetallist wants , the two metals brought to the same level in every respectin coinage , in the charge for coinage , in debt-paying power , in their treatment by the United States Government , in all their uses as coin , including , of course , the redemption of every note and the payment of every bond which is legally payable in coin . This is a real parity and if the word were put into the party platforms with this meaning they might ...

insti WISCONSIN IN THE LEAD . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 9 April 1896

insti WISCONSIN IN THE LEAD . B ETWEEN the vigorous efforts of the tarmers - tutes and the inspection , and protest of the ubiquitous bicycle riders the state of Wisconsin is getting waked up on the subject of good roads . An organization called the . Wisconsin League for Good Roads has been formed and has laid out certain definite lines of action , chief among which is the levying by the state legislature of a state road tax , by which the state is to take a hand in building at least one good highway through every town in the State . Such a law has been in operation in Massachusetts , and New Jersey for several years , and : has resulted in a system of road-building that will ultimately place these states far in the lead in the matter of smooth and indestructible highways . New York has just adopted the state tax method and Pennsylvania will soon follow the Empire State . Illinois , Iowa and other great Western states should take similar action at once . The improvement must come s...

to ine FROM DENVER TO NEW YORK . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 9 April 1896

to ine FROM DENVER TO NEW YORK . THE reply of the Denver Chamber ot commerce letter from the New York Chamber of Commerce is both able , earnest and ingenuous ; There is ho attempt to make political capital by a ilashy juggling with stock catch-words . The New York letter is answered with more courtesy and fairness than it deserved , and a completeness which will convince many unprejudiced readers , and would convince many more if the gold-bound press would only publish it On another page will be found an epitome of tHe letter . Here are a few telling extracts . Speaking ofthevarious decisions that the greenbacks were redeemable in coin , it says : Observance of the law would have made gold raids on the treasury impossible ; bond issues unnecessary arid bond syndicates unknown , and again : Nothing stands in the way of confidence and prosperity but the dealer in public securities , who deploring their issue demands more of them . , ¦¦ ¦ .-, ^ ^^^\ 0 \ £ ^ i ^ i ^^ % { m ^ in the att...

SOMJBJ , HOUSEOLEAtflNG PRELIMI -/ :-. i - , < NAMES . —I . -. t [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 9 April 1896

SOMJBJ , HOUSEOLEAtflNG PRELIMI- / :-. i - , < NAMES . —I . -. t LBANLINESS is—supposedly—next to godliness ; but the frame of mind into which the average family is plunged at housecleaning periods is quite often the opposite kind . One feels , after a long struggle with semi-annual accumulations , that has , left body and nerves weary and irritable , a barbaric superstition creeping over , one s modern and enlightened mind in uncanny idea of the perversity of inanimate things as the tack-hammer aimed so emphatically at a crooked-legged tack descends upon our tingling fingers , or the elaborate lampshade or choice vase manages to be involved in an accident , or the tool most needed is lost , or the stove-pipe resists all persuasion . In a dull sort of way we repeat the old saying about cleanliness and are upheld by a dim idea of virtuous attainments therein , but persistently haunted by recollections of sharp words and impatient manners to the children who , poor innocent...

AN ANTISEPTIC CHRISTIAN . t i [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 9 April 1896

AN ANTISEPTIC CHRISTIAN . t i Talented , beautiful and a charming housekeeper is the wife of Ballington Booth , commander of the new Volunteer Army , says the Chronicle . In an interview , Mrs . Booth says of herself : Outside of my work I have few if any interests , but 1 my fad , if you can call it a fad at all ; is the amateur study of surgery . You see , I believe in what I call an antiseptic Christian—a Christian who takes as good care of the thoughts and deeds that operate on the soul as a surgeon takes of the instruments with which he operates on the human body . In the search for analogies and mustrations that can be used on the platform I pursue this study , and it gives me incidentally an opportunity to talk to medical students on a line which is very interesting to them , as it deals with subjects that are to them so important . I can talk to them in their own vernacular ^ you see , and I have already given several addresses before college classes . Did you know I have pu...

COLONY NEWS •¦^ MMMHM ( Continued from page . 482 . ) and tons of fruit are annually shipped from this . city alone . We assure those whoare looking to California either for a home or an investment will make no mistake in choosing Fair Oaks . ***** The following letter from W . D . Clark , a former well-known citizen of Bloomington , 111 ., is the opinion of a business man of fortune and careful judgment : Los Angeles , Feb . 24 , 1896 . J . W . Wilson , Dear Sir : * * * * I was up at Fair . Oaks last week ; found things looking very promising . I have visited most of the leading cities and orange groves of Southern California this month , and after a careful summing up I am well pleased with my Fair Oaks investment and cannot see why Fair Oaks should not succeed as well as Riverside , Redlahds or Pomona , with several advantages in favor of Fair Oaks . I was at Riverside three weeks ago . The citizens told me that perhaps there were 2 , 000 carloads of oranges that were on the grou...
