THE DAIRY . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 17 June 1880

THE DAIRY . A DAIRY FARM . Nine years ago I began weeding my herd of cattle , testing them and dispensing with all that were not better than average , I bought some cows , raised heifers irom my best stock , and when in inilk , if one fell below my standard of a good cow , I sold her as soon as possible . Those of my own raising have nearly always proved superior to those purchased . I flnd that no cow will do as well when changing homes and masters , as she will on her original home . When I had fourteen as good natives as I could well collect for butter making , I purchased a well bred , registered Jersey bull , and raised my heifers , and from that source my present herd . I pasture in Summer , always feeding something at milking . I raise sometimes a little rye for early feed , also oats and peas sowed together , clover , Hungarian , corn fodder , and feed a little to bring the cows in good natured , always milking in the barn . I feed bran and shorts , more or less , during the...

THE WOOL TRADE . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 17 June 1880

THE WOOL TRADE . Few articles of raw or semi-raw material have shown greater fluctuations in value during the past eight months than wool . The opening of the Fall trade of 1879 was followed by an unusual demand for woolen goods , for consumption , and it was soon ascertained that the supplies of such fabrics were altogether inadequate to the demand . As a natural consequence , package dealers and jobbers , being anxious to respond to the demand for goods , made haste to place orders for fabrics . Manufacturers iwho had for years either been idle or only partly employed , because there was no demand for the products of their mills at remunerative prices , suddenly found themselves overwhelmed with calls for goods , and being short of wool , they at once commenced buying with more activity than discretion . The market that had for months been stagnant at once assumed a position of unusual activity ; prices went bounding up as the season advanced ; medium fleece washed wools that were...

INSURANCE . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 17 June 1880

INSURANCE . MUTUAL INSURANCE CONSIDERED . In the last issue of the FABMEBS REVIEW , we referred briefly to the principal causeB which , in our opinion , rendered the mutual plan of fire insurance impracticable , i . e ., the restricted area of their operation and the voluntary character of the obligation assumed by the members among themselves . We are satisfied that any one who has carefully perused the insurance department of this paper during the last few years , has found in it very many examples furnishing strong evidence of the existence of these causes . Only a few months ago we found the report in a country paper of the annual meeting of a town mutual , in which the president addressed the members in terms of glowing self-con-gratulation upon the satisfactory condition of the company . He spoke of it as having overcome the numerous difficulties attending the inauguration of every new enterprise , and being now fairly established , standing on its ewn legs , as it were , and ...

HAUNTED ME . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 17 June 1880

HAUNTED ME . Debt , poverty and suffering haunted me for years , caused by a sick family and large bills for doctoring , which did no good . I was completely discouraged , until one year ago , by the advice of my pastor , I procured Hop Bitters and commenced their use , and in one month we were all well , and none of us have been sick a day since ; aud I want to say to all poor men , you can keep your families well a year with Hop Bitters for less than one doctor s visit will cost—A Workingman .

FOR YOUNG READERS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 17 June 1880

FOR YOUNG READERS . SAY WELL , AND DO WELL . Say well from do well differs ln letter ; Say well ls good , but do well ls better . Say well says godry , and helps to please : But do well lives godly , and gives tbe world ease . Say well in danger of death is cold , Do well Is harnessed , and wondrous bold . Say welt to silence sometimes ls bound , But do well ls free ln every stound . * Say well bas friends , some here , some there , But do well ls welcome everywhere . By say well many a one to Gods Word cleaves . But for lack of do well it quickly leaves . If say well and do well were joined In one frame Then all were done , all were won , and gotten the game . • Hour . THE PASSENGER PIGEON .
