On the subject of Gen . Jackson s health the New England Weekly Review says ; Bulletins are issued at stated periods of time from the office of the government official , announcing , that the President s health is good and his mental faculties are wholly unimpaired . What is the meaning of these assurances ? Why , if Andrew Jackson does enjoy sound health ; why , if Hi * mind is still v igorous , does tlTe Globe feel itself called upon to state the matter so often and so feelingl y to the public » In our view , an apprehension lurks beneath the announcement , which the managers would fain conceal . The eastern papers contain notices of meetings in New York and Philadelphia , got up to produce a political effect on account of the rejection of Van Buren . The Tammanies of New-York took the lead in this besin .-ss , and their patriotism found verit in sundry resolutions an-. ! speeches . — There have been meetings on the other side also , and one held in New York , at which an immense number of citizens attended , unanimously approved of the rejection . The Jackson parly in Pennsylvania , appear to be well satisfied with the proceedings of the . Senate . The Regency of New York are now attempting to an . use the party in that State , ( which apparently cares very little for the disgrace of its leader , ) as is evidenced by the annexed copy of a letter to a member of Con gress : W , rcKr . oo , > . V . Feb . II , ? ,. 1638 . Dear Sir—When Clinton was turned out of the office of canal c „ inn , | s-ioi er , , 1 needed no public meetings , no slump speeches , to inf...

THE GREAT FLOOD IN THE OHIO . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 8 March 1832

THE GREAT FLOOD IN THE OHIO . The details of the calamities occasioned by the late flood in Ohio arc most melancholy . In Pittsburgh tbe waters rose higher than ever they were known before . People residing on the islands and the margins of the rivers were driven from their houses . several of which were literally swept away . Wherever the torrent reached , it was resistless , sweeping flocks and herds , and making the fields and plains desolate and bare . -In Pittshurg , the waters came tip four squares into the city . A meeting has been called there for tbe relief of the sufferers . All the bridges between Pittsburgh and Beaver have been carried away or rendered impassable . —The Wheeling Times says , The destruction of property is beyond calculation . The whole valley of the Ohio , from its source to its mouth , within the reach of this tremendous freshet , must present one uninterrupted scene of waste , desolation and distress . The farms on the rich bottoms have been swept of...
