Berkshire Show at the Louisiana State Fair . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910

Berkshire Show at the Louisiana State Fair . The New South is a fact . There was a time when Louisiana and other southern states bred very few hogs . Berkshires have always been the favorite hog in the southland , and today one will find as many good Berkshires at the State Fairs in the South as at almost any northern State Fair . In fact , at the 1910 Louisiana State Fair , held at Shreveport , the show of Berkshires compared favorably with that held at Illinois , Indiana , or Ohio . This is true both as to numbers and quality . L . N . BRUEGGERHOFF , I The Popular Secretary The Berkshire breeders in Louisiana are an enthusiastic lot . They heartily believe in Berkshires and nothing but the best is good enough for these men . They do not believe in half way meas ures . It is whole hog or none witt them , and the whole hog is nothing short of an outstanding Berkshire . Berkshire breeders in Louisiana have every advantage over breeders in the more northern and consequently colder sta...

Hog Notes— -By a Practical Hog Man [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910

Hog Notes— -By a Practical Hog Man A . J . Lovejoy , Roscoe , 111 . How We Take Care of Our Pigs in the Winter . Commencing with the brood sows , which have been running on good pasture during the summer and eavly fall , after having weaned their litters they are naturally in rather of R thin though thrifty condition . We commence feeding about the time that sweet corn is in the roasting ear and feed them a very little in connection with . their pasture . If quite thin we also feed them lightly on a ration of ground feed or middlings . We also handle our young things , that are coming one 1 year old , from last falls litters , in about the same way . While the litters of last spring that are intended for sale or for breeders are pushed somewhat heavier with good feed , as it is necessary to develop the young things as fast as is considered safe on a ration that will grow and extend their frame , and also give them a good , fair amount of flesh . This is done by good pasture and a va...
