A bii( suar war, between tho Spreckels' Western Suar Refinery and a combination cf the independent Hawaiian plantation owners under the name of the Sugar Factors Com pany, Ltd., is on andis beintr wiitrh ed by business Dn. finani-itvl i-iicles. The independent 'company controls t.iirty-seven out of the forty-two ishnd plantations wh ch wn their sugar mills and controls 40J.000 tons of the annual output, which is about 85 per cent of the total yearly pro duction. On this account Spreckels is being forced at great expense to get the raw product from Java and other remote sections. For three years Spreckels has been paying 1200,000 annually to the owners of the sugar refinery at Crokett to keep it closed. He also had a contract with the Hawaiian planters by which he took yearly 150, 000 tons of their product at a discount of i of ...
