Anting JPtatc journal WEDNESDAY EVKN'O, JAN. 24,1872. FORTY-SECOND CONGRESS—2d Session Tuesday, Jan. 23rd. SENATE. Mr. Pomeroy, from the Committee on Public Lands, reported the bill to set apart the valley near the head-waters of the Yellow Stone river for a pnhlic park, to be under the control of the Secretary of the Interior. Mr. Pomeroy said the valley was about •(0x4") miles, and it was thought best to pass this bill at once, before any private claimants could lay title to any portion of the land. In the case of the Vosemite Valley there were two private parties who claimed to have taken up portions of the land, and had carried tho matter to the Supreme court. Mr. Thinratan objected to the present consideration of the bill, and it went over. Mr. Sherman, from the Committee on Finance, reported bill to authorize the importation, free of duty, of certain machinery intended for mining experiments in Ixmisiana, which was passed. The general amnesty bill was then taken up. HOUSE OF R...

droning #tote journal THURSDAY KVKNING, .IAN. K,iß7*. POLITICAL NOTES. of the States South calls for earnest attention on the part of our thinking men. It is useless to review the causes that have injured the harmony and well nigh destroyed the efficiency of the party organization. Want of skiil among men intrusted with leadership and the machinations of greedy, unscrupulous harpies, who fastened themselves upon the party at its formation in the South with the sole idea of making monej, arc among the principal causes of disaster. Without indulging in personal allusions, we can safely say that those individuals who went into the party poor and rapidly acquired wealth are of the class referred to as disgracing Republicanism, and making our party name a reproach among a people too apt to be prejudiced. Such men have been marked and rejected in North and South Carolina, in Georgia. Alabama, Louisiana, and Arkansas, and to the great gain of tho National I'nion organization. The scum ever...

droning £tate journal FRIDAY EVENING, JAN. 20, 1872. ! H\ir the State Journ il. IN FORMA PAtPERIS. Gilded the lops of the cross*** And as I-passed through the portal. Mid the idle Sunday throng, A little procession of mourners Bore a rude coffin along. They seemed very humble people. And no one turned aside, To look on such homely sorrow, Or ask who it was had died. I followed the birr to the corner, Where tut beneath the sod, In a trench—not a grave—they would bury This lowly child of God. When they came to lower.the cofl.li., A "Priez pour _//r'' was said, And they sprinkled the holy water Over the dust of the dead. Bnt a holier rain descended From the depths of a bursting heart, The tears of the little orphan Who in agony stood apart. Poor gin: we can offer no solace To soothe the anguish you feel; But strength from on high will be giveu No shrine of the sculptured marble Shall rife above the spot, No flattering, false inscription, Shall tell what thy mother was not. But hore the...
