THURSDAY. NOVEMBER 2. 1978 THE BASTROP COUNTY- TIMES, SMITHVILLE, TEXAS 78957 SEC. II. PAGE 1 Lions Rally, Beat Bears LEANDER — "We jumped on them, then let 'em go." said Bastrop coach Dennis Gorka. The first - year Bear mentor was referring to his team's 31-13 defeat by Leander in District 12AAA action Friday night. At one point in the First quarter, the Bears led 13-0. Bastrop started like it had left off the previous week against Taylor. Thomas "Bubba" Jef- ferson. who led the Bears with 172 yards on 16 carries for the evening, broke an 87-yard touch- down run around the right end on the Bears' second possession. The try for the extra point failed and the Bears led 6-0. Following a bad Lean- der punt, Bastrop took over again at the Lion 49 and drove for a second score. Quarterback Ricky Lincoln passed to flanker James Brown for the final 28 yards and Keith Tuck kicked the PAT. The Bears led 13-0. "And then we went to sleep." said Gorka. whose Bears arc now 2-3 in district and 2-4...

McClen- don said that his team had only suffered "bumps, bruises, and hurt pride." Smithville, too, escaped serious injury to any of it? players. Considering the Tigers' depth, that is a major asset. Starting with Friday's game with Elgin, the Tig- ers face probably the three toughest consec- utive weeks of their season.
