soundout By David Webb questions with Dawn Meifert Dawn Meifert is president and chief executive officer of MergeMedia Group, a Dallas-based advertising agency focusing on the GLBT community. Meifert is a former celebrity photogra- pher who shot entertainment and sports figures for movie and food product advertising cam- paigns for 15 years. Her subjects included Jeff Bridges, Kevin Costner, Jackie Collins, Tommy Lee Jones and Denzel Washington. She has worked with numerous Fortune 500 companies. Her current client list includes Coors, Classic BMW and the International Gay Rodeo. What led you to form an advertising company focusing on the GLBT community? I wasitired of having subscriptions to magazines such as Out and Instinct and seeing general market ads featuring heterosexual couples in our gay magazines. I thought someone needed to start an advertising agency that solely focused on the GLBT community. I thought, Why is it OK for companies to be recycling their general market adv...

dossier Duke keeps it on the down low Bil Duke The "down low" is about to come up further above ground. The not-so-new phenomenon — referring mainly to the practice of African-American men engaging in secret same-sex encounters — has jumped from the best-seller list (with books like JL King's "Coming tip from the Down Low") to "Oprah" and will soon be in a theater near you. The much-talked-about topic is the subject of the upcoming feature film "Cover." Directed by veteran character actor Bill Duke ("The Limey," "Get Rich or Die Tryin'"), it's the story of a married man leading a double life and experi- encing the consequences of the closet. Penned by first-time screenwriter Aaron Rahsaan Thomas, the drama looks to cause as much controversy as the books that preceded it. Hopefully, under Duke's hand, a less sensation- alistic approach will prevail when the movie opens this July. tion. He thinks he'll come in fifth or sixth. But he believes his candidacy serves to keep important issues front-and-center in the campaign. The top two vote-getters will advance to a May 20 runoff election. Arey said his sexual orientation has at no time become an issue in the campaign. The second gay candidate is Leo Watermeier, a former state representative and founding co-chair of the Lesbian and Gay Community Center of New Orleans. He is promising to "cut the waste" in such areas as no-bid contracts, consultants, outside attorneys, unclassified employees, city cars, employee trav- el and public relations. With the savings, he pro- poses to improve the police department, cut the crime rate, fix the streets, upgrade city services and restore parks, playgrounds and libraries. New Orleans, Watermeier points out, has a "reputation of corruption, political payoffs and sweetheart deals." In the wake of the disaster, Watermeier says the city's levees and pumps must be upgraded to pro-...

news Oklahoma school board overturns gay rights policy SHAWNEE — In a shocking reversal, the Oklahoma state school board has overturned a policy protecting gay students from discrimina- tion from teachers. Representative Kevin Calvey of Del City, OK., released a press statement this week taking credit for requesting this change from the school board and thanking various conservative reli- gious organizations for their assistance. . Carrying out Representative Calvey's request was state schools superintendent Sandy Garrett, who pressed for passage of the change without public hearing. The previous Oklahoma school board policy stated that teachers could not "deny benefits to any student" or "grant any advantage to any stu- dent" based on sexual orientation. The new pol- icy reads, "the teacher shall comply with all fed- eral and state anti-discrimination laws." Federal and state laws do not protect students on the basis of sexual orientation or gender iden- tity. In a Tulsa World arti...
