I haven't changed my mind. Forget Valetine's Day, President's Day, or the fact the Super Bowl is now played dur- ing the month. There's nothing about it that's any good, except it only lasts 28 days, sometimes 29. As a sports fan, February offers little in the way of championship fever. March Madness is. well, in March, and the NBA and NHL playoffs are months away. Not when we have to stait cover- ing outdoor sports, such as softball, baseball, and track, and especially when all of them are extremely weather-sensitive. A few drops of rain, or at least a consistent downpour, will put a quick end to many a contest this time of year, except for, perhaps, soccer. Even there, a flooded field equals cancellation. What it all means for people like myself (weekly newspaper sport...

'Jilplppp^ : ' - Wylie Boys Soccer t File photo Brice Reusink (14) and the Wylie Pirates face an uphill battle for the district championship. However, they are in a comfortable position to earn a postseason berth. Pirates take aim at second place By Greg Ford Barring some small miracles, the Wylie Pirates likely will nol finish first in District 14-4A. So, why not aim for the next best thing? "I think winning the district championship is asking a lot," Pirate head coach George Velten said. "I think that might even be out of reach right now." The Pirates were 6-2 in district play after Friday's 4-0 victory at Kaufman. The triumph began the second round of district competi- tion, a stretch of games during which the Pirates look to clinch a playoff spot. A few weeks ago, Velten and the Pirates hoped to enter the postsea- son as district champs. However, a pair of back-to-back losses to Highland Park (4-1) and Greenville (1-0) may have made that impossi- ble. "We have the potential to b...

Facing a 16-point deficit during the third quarter of a second-round game against area powerhouse Lincoln, the Pirates rallied their forces and staged a comeback that actually put them ahead, 54-53, for a short time in the fourth quarter. However, the Tigers' talent and big-game experience proved too much, as Wylie fell 62-58 at the L.V. Berkner High School gymna- sium. Three days earlier, the Pirates (18-13) defeated Mount Pleasant 68-54 in a bi-district playoff game at Prairiland High School in Pattonville. "We had some guys step up," head coach David Black said. "They're a good ball club, and 1 think tonight we proved that we're a good ball club. It's unfortunate that in a ga...

They agree uni- forms put an end to the expensive and sometimes violent fashion competition plaguing most schools today. Opponents argue schools should celebrate diversity rather than uni- formity and intrusion on free- expression rights. According to a recent survey by the National Association of School Principals, the number of schools that require uniforms have dramati- cally increased. Reports from those schools in Miami, Long Beach, Chicago, Boston, New York, Tulsa and Oklahoma City show a drastic reduction in violence and crime and an increase in academic excellence.
