FOOTBALL AUSTRALIAN RULES [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 18 July 1927

FOOTBALL AUSTRALIAN RULES Increasing- interest is being- shown in the competition as the four teams, hav ing experimented with a considerable number of volunteers, have decided on their regular combinations and are settling down for the decisive premier ship contests. The fact that they are all "in the four" has not contributed to particu larly keen interest so far, but in the last couple ol' games, the standard of play has been raised to such an extent that hitherto luke-warm supporters of the game are having the flames of en thusiasm stirred, and are confident of AINSLIE AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL TEAM seeing the game at its best for the finals. Added interest will be provided for these since the play will be sub ject to the critical eyes of incomers from Melbourne. Next month, the Queenslanders will try conclusions with our best, the first inter-Staters of any code to appear in Canberra. Our own team has not yet been announced, but the display of in dividuals during the season has...

CANBERRA CITY BAND PUBLIC SUPPORT PROMISED [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 18 July 1927

CANBERRA CITY BAND PUBLIC SUPPORT PROMISED Tho Canberra Hand's half-yearly meeting' was held at Acton Hall on Wednesday, June 30, and critical ques tions came up for debate, and as a result of the conference it is safe to prophesy that the band's musical career will be as brilliant as the Cap ital itself. There was a while ago a danger of the band falling to pieces, but the pertinacity of many of its members, the musical enthusiasm of its conductor, the laudable efforts of its Committee, and the support and en couragement of the Social Service Branch, has chased the crisis into oblivion. Mr. 8. R. Pearl presided, and practi cally all the members of the band were present; owing to pressure of official duties Sir John Butters, K.B., M.B.E., C.M.G., was unable to take part in the meeting, but he empowered the Social Service Officer to assure the meeting that he was heartily in sym pathy with, and behind the band. The Secretary's report showed there was a credit balance in the bank of £...

CANBERRA ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 18 July 1927

CANBERRA ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY A capital city without an orchestra is almost as inconceivable as a bank without money, and it was clearly in cumbent upon the musicians of the city to form a musical combination for the purpose of producing some of the magnificent orchestral music that great composers have given to the world. The Social Service Branch accord ingly invited all instrumentalists to attend a preliminary meeting which was held at the Social Service rooms on Thursday, 30th June, and which was well attended. Various details of the organisation were discussed, and plans in outline agreed to. By unani mous vote it was resolved to form the Society, and ar inventory disclosed that all varieties of wood, wind and brass, as well as a full range of string ed instruments would be available. A pro tem committee consisting of Messrs. Copland (Chairman) D. Flynn (Conductor), C. W. Guthrie (Hon. Treas.), and C. Pike (Hon. Sec.) was appointed, and authorised to fix a date for the first rehe...

LIBRARY NOTES [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 18 July 1927

LIBRARY NOTES The committee of the library ha« much pleasure in ' stating: that an addi tional supply of books has been added to the library's shelves. Subscribers are requested to exercise as much care as possible in the use of books and not cause them to bc any more damaged than possible. A good deal of carelessness and laxity has been noticed, and some subscribers have books in their possession long overdue. In many instances, even re gistered letters to offenders have not brought forth response. At a special meeting of the library committee held recently it was decided to enforce the by-law which provide» that: "Tfie period for keeping books shall be 14 days, if any member retains a book or refuses to liand it over to the lion, secretary when requested to do so after the specified period of li days, lie or site shall pay 1/- for every 7 days or part thereof and if, upon final notice being served upon him or her personally, or by regis tered letter, to his or her last-known addre...

SOCIAL SERVICE ASSOCIATION WORK OF THE STANDING COMMITTEES. WOMEN AND INFANTS' WELFARE [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 18 July 1927

SOCIAL SERVICE ASSOCIATION WORK OF THE STANDING COMMITTEES. WOMEN AND INFANTS' WELFARE . In requesting: the council of the Canberra Mothercraft Society to act as the standing- committee on Wo men's and Infants* Welfare, your council realised that this important phase of welfare work in our commun ity was in safe hands. The degree of success attained by the society during the past twelve months is an out standing feature of this report. Dur ing a comparatively short period these public-spirited women of Canberra have not only raised several hundreds of pounds by public appeal, but have actually established in full working order the first baby health centre in our national capital. Strong branch committees of the Society are es tablished at Ainslie, Acton, Causeway and Eastlake, delegates from these centres, together with the officers of the society, comprising the council. Much of the success of the earlier efforts of the society were due to the first hon. secretary (Mr. P. T. Mc Nam...

ACTON [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 18 July 1927

ACTON In an article appearing under the heading "Real Social Service*' in the Canberra "rimes" of 28th June, tho following words appear regarding ths Annual Meeting of the Acton Branch of the Canberra Social Service Asso ciation. '*The Annual Meeting held last night indicated that in this branch was to be found social service in its true form, or at least to a more notice able extent than in other districts of Canberra. The atmosphere which per vaded discussions was essentially that in which might thrive the principles and practice of social service as con ceived by its founder in Canberra." The reputation gained by the Acton Branch in this regard, is one of which members should be proud and augurs well for future activities In the district. The Hon. Secretary (Mr. L. Mar gules) reported that during the year the membership of the Branch had reached 48, and the credit balance stood at £11/19/10, after making a gift of £10 to the Acton Park Tennis Court.
