N M | From our Own Correspondent.] In anticipation of the Katoomba Munici pal Band being an accomplished fact in the near future Mr. Gollan is making arrange ments for a Fife and Drum Band in con nection with the Leum Public School. This ? will be an acquisition to the school and town, ana we wisn me movement every success. We trust that not alone Leura, but every school on the Mountains, will go in for its Fife and Diunn Band. It is the intention of the Katoomba Coun cil to take the top of the hill off on the Bathurst road at the intersection with L,eura Mall. This has always been . a nasty pinch, and the work, when finished, will be a great improvement. It is inten ded to take off about three feet at the crown of the hill. Mr. L,. KATOOMBA TOWN HALL. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 21 August 1909

KATOOMBA TOWN HAI.lv. This question, which has been the subject of more or less controversy and comment since it was first .suggested, will soon be laid before the ratepayers for their decision as to whether a Hall should be built or not. ixn tiie question is not quite ciear iu a number of the ratepayers it is just as well for them to understand it clearly at the outset. It resolves itself into the simple question whether Katoomba shall have a Hall or .shall not have one. It is for the ratepayers to decide once and for all. That a good Hall is sadly needed is beyond dispute, and the manner in which the Municipal Council propose to build it is the best that can be devised at present. The amount required to build the Hall proposed, and to furnish it, is approxi mately ^3000. To pay this sum back a rate of one-third of a penny in the £ will be levied, which, together with the income from the Hall, would enable- the Council to pay the sum borrowed in about six }^ears, after which the Co...

The Technical Dressmaking and Millinery Classes. The Technical Classes held under the able tuition of Miss King, teacher of Dress making, Millinery, Underclothing, Corset Making, etc., are progressing most satis factorily. The attendance is increasing, and the classes are evidently being better appreciated, ana wiien one consiuers uie excellent opportunities they afford for girls to provide themselves with a means of a respectable and pleasant way of earning a livelihood, as well as of making themselves the able and competent wives that men are beginning to desire, it is not very surpris ing that this should be so. It is full of interest to watch the pupils at work. There one can see girls with deft fingers fixing a wire into the latest hat shapes, sewing on the straw, blending the colors of ribbons, flowers, laces or feathers, until the whole ' creation' is finished, and our Australian girls are usually clever and artistic, and the work produced can bear comparison with the latest ...
