THE BOERS AS THE CHOSEN PEOPLE. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 13 October 1899

TIHE 11,ER AR T E M0 CHOSEN PEOPLE. It is now some years ago (says a writer t in theli'Church Gazette-") t.jaltt I had an opportunity of making the aCquaintance of I severl' 'members of - the 'Boers' Govern inent, but I well remnember the day and the conversation. We soon became quite , friendly, because, as it happened, my father's name, which was at one time well known to "all the religious people in c Holland. was. quite familiar to then. They had read several of his books. We talked on educational and religious mat ters, anl I left my hosts half an hour after with a feeling that 1. could respect them. especially from a distince, but that I should he very sorry to live under their paternal governmnei. They art' strong men, those 3Boers, in whom the old Batavian blood mingles with that of the a Low Teuton and the Lluguenot; but, like the majority of forceful men, they are essentially.oue-idea'd. The great workers of. the worhl have generally been noon- I maniacs. With the Dutch Bn...

UNREASONABLE EXPECTATIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 13 October 1899

UT:RLEASONAB LE EXPEVTL A recent iisue of the Esse?woo GAZETTE, has something to say about: 'Unreasonable Expectations' in regard to printing, advertising, and cheap paragraphs, which is worth re-produc tion i-" On about half-a-dozen occ sions recently, we, appear to have given offence to gentlemen through carrying out one of the well-laid down rules of our business. We take it that every business firm ias'a perfect right to lay down add maintain, as basic lines, the rules it intends to abide by for its future governance. .Many years ago we adopte'd the rule. to decline inser tion of a paragraph about any public event for which admission was charged, ori from which a revenue was derived unless such event -.vere simultaneously advertised in out columns. MELBOURNE NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 13 October 1899

MELBOURIRE- NOTES. The substitution of photo. pictures for the woodcuts of former times in illustrated papers does not always have the desired effect, as witness the "Leader" and "Australasian" last week. In the forneuj, there is a re presentation of the, luncheon of. the military commandants of the various colonies at Parliament House, in which Messrs. Gillies and Best, M's.L.A. are " wonderfully and fearfully" pour trayed, and in the last-named journal there is a flashlight reproduction of the Victorian Rsilwvays dinner at the Ma.sonic Hall last Saturday night. In it such distinguished personages as the Governor, Premier, and Attorney General have come out little better than caricatures, and the last named gentleman instesad of resembling one of the people'of Israel, appeiars like a direct descendant of Ham, who, we are told, was the progenitor of the great nigger family. The windows of the different news. agents in Melbourne were last week enlivened by a group of portraits of I s...

(From our Correspondent.) A meeting of the Yea'River Ilai1 way League took place .at Toolangi House last Saturday, and in spite of the bad weather prevailing was well attended. A long discussion. on the want of funds necessary for future agitation took place, and it. was de cided to make a levy of 10s. per mem ber. The prospect of a branch line to Kinglake was also discussed, and an unanimous decision was arrived at on the subject. Other routine business *as transacted, and the meeting closed. Wet weather still prevails, and is greatly interfering wlth.the growth of everything, and, as a consequence, the grass will be very late in cotiing. A slight fall of snow took place on Mon day last.
