To the Editors of the Sydney Morning Herald. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Morning Herald — 24 September 1842

To the. Editors of the Sydney Morning Herald. OBNTLEMEN,-lil your loader of this morn- ing, referring to the case of Mr. Nott, you say that it is unlawful for a magistrate to administer an oath in a matter not judicially before him : a manner of putting it which may lead a justice of the peace to suppose that it is not lawful for him to administer an affidavit in any such matter. Now, whatever may be the case in England (and, 1 believe the law applied in Nott's case has there the generality ascribed to it) I venture to affirm that it is not soliere. It is a question fitted for a lawyer, but if there be no ripe one conve- nient to you, I submit to you the following, as pretty nearly the state and history of the case : In the Sixth year of the Reign of His Majesty, King William the Fourth, an Act was passed with the following most lumber flomc and lawyer-like title :-" An Act to repeal an Act of the present Session of Par- liament, intituled an Act for the more effec- tual Abolition o...

To the Editors of the Sydney Morning Herald. TEMPERATURE OF BOILING WATER. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Morning Herald — 24 September 1842

To the Editors of the Sydney Morning Herald. I TEMPERATURE OF BOILING WATER, j If»,- "* - - - uentlemen,-Since I addressed to you my second letter I have obtained the following information respecting the Hawkesbury River, which it may be useful to communicate : It appears that the salt water does not flow higher, generally, than within two or three miles of Sackville Reach; and that the fresh water is seldom, if ever, dammod back by the salt, above " the Falls" at Howell'a Mill, just above Belmont, where the Grose joins the Nepean. This point seems determined by a rapid of a few feet in height. From Penrith to Windsor, a computed dis- tance of twenty-four miles, by the windings of the river, the Nepean passes over several rapids ; and the noise of one of them I have heatd at the crossing place at Emu Ford. I have no doubt, that the difference of level is more considerable than is imagined. Permit me to correct_ a typograpical error in the last letter. The instrument employed by Capt...

(Circular.) Colonial Secretary's Office, Aug. 20, 1842. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Morning Herald — 24 September 1842

(Circular.) I Colonial Secretary's Office, Aug. 20,1812. I Sir.-The Licutenaut-Governor having had under consideration, in the Executive Council, your communication, enclosing a resolution passed by the shareholders of the Commercial Bank, in which they propose to discontinue payment of interest to their depositors, and to reduce the rate of discount to eight per cent., provided the Goveremcnt will allow the pub- lic money to remain in their handd upon the same terms as that of other dopositors ;-I have the honor to acquaint you, that His Ex- cellency, in the belief that a reduced rate of discount would, at present, not only be a great public benefit in itself, but that it would lead eventually to a proportional re- duction in the rate of interest generally, has, with the advice ol' the Council, determined upon allowing the deposits of public money to remain without interest in those Banks which bhall discontinue that allowance to other depositors, and reduce their rate of dis- coun...

WILFUL MURDER, BY SOME PERSON OR PERSONS UNKNOWN. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Morning Herald — 24 September 1842

WILFUL MURDER, BY SOME PERSON OR PERSONS UNKNOWN. Yesterday morning, the inquest which had     been adjourned from Wednesday last was terminated, so far as the inquisition before   the Coroner and his jury is concerned.   The inquiry was instituted on the body of a woman, unknown, which had been found floating in a waterhole near the first round- house on the Parramatta-road. The body   appeared to have been in the water some ten days or more and decomposition had so far advanced that it was impossible to distinguish     the features. From the evidence of Mr. Surgeon   Cuthill, there was every reason to believe that the woman had come to her death   by drowning; and further, under the circum-   stances in which she was found, that that drowning was not voluntary, but that the woman had been held in the water, head downwards, until suffocation had been pro...
