A PUBLIC meeting of a very unusual charac ter was hold in Kiama last Friday evening, when a number of property.holders as. sembled in tilo Council Olhamlier to devise means for putting a stop to simple larceny, as represented by tile nocturnal raids of some lawless persons upon dilapidated fen. ces-presumably with the olbject of obtain. ing cheap firewood. Public meetings as a rule seem to be less popular in Kiama than in many smaller places, and they are usually convened after a precaution has been taken to secure an audience by obtaining signs. tures to a requisition of ratepayers, on the strength of which the Mayor ventures to convene the meeting. In the present in. stance this formula was departed from, nor does it appear to have been at all necessary. Tho obscurest property holder who had lost' a bottom rail from his fence would have had no difliculty in getting together a goodly number of sympathisors in punctual and eager attendance. Anroxa thi recent utterances of SilR Itritrs PAlmt.rs during the present parliamentary racess his remarks on thie subject of re trenchment in the public service as a promi nont fOature of the Government policy are specially deserving of attoention. Retrench. mont has cotmmnnced in earnest, and has borne fruit in dissatisfaction in somu quar ters, and undoubted hardship in others, To contract an overgrown Oivil Servico down to the limits of actual requirements is no easy or agrecable task, yet the reckless extrava gance of the past has rendered it imperative, and the Ministry which, with the approval of the country has set its hand to the work of financial reformation, must not falter at the present stago. Further economy will be needed to reduce our expenditur, to somewhere about the proper level. Pro. vious Governments have drifted into the habit of spending about a million and a half per annum more than they had any right to spend, and more than was necessary for ef ficient govern...
