THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL DRAMATIC ENTERTAINMENT. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 7 August 1896

THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL DRAMATIC ENTERTAINMENT. IT affords us much pleasure to be able to chronicle the unqualified success which the performance of " Arrah-na Pogue," as produced by Mr. Will Lyons and his talented dramatic company, in the North Melbourne Town Hall, on Monday evening, 3rd August, in aid of the funds of the local branch of the Society of St. Vincent do Paul, has proved to be. This in itself demon strates the prominent position, among charitable institutions, which the above society occupies, and we say most deser vedly so, as in its operations as regards doling out relief to the indigent poor of the district, there is not the least prefer ence given to class, creed, or nationality by the members of this praiseworthy insti tution. And whilst those who contri buted to so deserving and charitable an object, they must have felt that they were amply repaid, independent of the primary object, in the efficient manner in which Mr. Will Lyons (Erin's corn median), and his wel...

MAN AND BEAST. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 7 August 1896

MIAN: AND BEAST. Is a shop-window in one of the main street of Melbourne a novel sort of pre scription-card is to be seen. It consists of directions for the treatment of the va rious ills dogs are subject to, and is com piled with the object of showing the owners-of those quadrupeds how to treat them should they be overtaken by any disorder. In the ordinary course of events this is intelligible enough, and nothing could be more natural to sup pose than that those owning dogs would be glad to hear of remedies for the suf ferings of their canine possessions. But what strikes one in the list of nostrunms we are alluding to is their expensive and luxurious character. For instance, one prescription for a sick dog runs as fol lows:-" Change the food as much as possible . .. . sheep's head broth, boiled rice . . . also milk and po tatoes, with cod-liver oil; biscuits are good . . . give boiled fresh fish and tripe." In another case of a diseased " doggie," the owner is recommended to give ...
