MR. B. D'ISRAELI'S ADVICE TO YOUTH. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 April 1881

MLR. B. D'ISRAELI'S ADVICE TO YOUTH. At the opening of the Manchester Athenuum in 1841, the late E-r!' Beaconsfield-then 'Mr. D'Israeli-in the course of hi; speech said: "I would address myself to that youth on whom the hopes of all so cieties repose and depend. I doubt not that they feel conscious of the position which they occupy-a posi tion which, under all circumstances, at all periods, and in every clime and countr}, is replete with duty. The youth of a nation are the trustees of posterity ;.but' the youth I address have duties peculiar to the position which they occupy, They are the rising generation of a society un precedented in the history of the world; that is at once powerful and new. They will be called ono to per form duties-great duties. I, for one, wish for their gakes and for the sake of our country, that they may be per formed greatly. I give to them that counsel-which I have ever given to youth, and which I believe to be the wisest and the best-I tell them to aspir...

OUR SELECTORS-THEIR HOPES GRIEVANCES & PROSPECTS. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 April 1881

OUR SELECTORS-THEIR HTOPES GRIEVANCES & PROSPECTS. [Byr AncticoLts.] Having lately had an opportunity of visiting a good many of the selectors at their homesteads. I propose to de- I vote a few remarks to the subject of d their hopes, grievances and pro-pects, t and in doing so, shall endeavor to con- t fine nmvself to each of the three branches t into which the subject may: be divided in the order iii which I lhava placed themn. To, start then with the hopes. I may preface my remarks with the brief explanation that this branch may be divide i into twoheads, namely, the hopes which animated the selectors when they took up the land, and those which now encourage them to b persevere in their arduous labors. Most of our selectors settled upon the land with t"e idea that in quality it could not be surpassed (of which h more anon), and hopel that when the railway was completed, they would be able to send their produce to Melbourne I at such a coct that a good margin of profit wou...

LAND REFORM IN GERMANY. HOW THE PEASANTS OBTAINED FREEHOLDS IN SAXE-COBURG-GOTHA. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 April 1881

LAND REFORM IN GERMANY. fHow TIE PEASA-cTS OBTAINED FnaEIoLDu is SAXE-COBURG-GOTHIA. The little State of Saxe-Coburg Gotha, situated like a kernel in the heart of the German Empire, would, under ordinary circtnmstances, be of little interest to the Irish people, yet HerM3ajesty', Governmentdetermined to ileave no stone unturned to elucidate the knotty problem of "ipeasant pro prietorship," instructed the Foreign Office to study the working of the sys tenm in this little model German Satet, the result being a report lying before us, sig ed by Mr. Scott of that De partmen:t. In many points strog si:nilarity exists bet-ween the people of Thu,'in;ia, the local name by which they are known, and the people of Ireland. Stronger points still exist in common between their feudal land system, swept away forty-four years ago, and its kindred sister ntow dying an a-o:nizing death in this country. The G(ermanu " Bauer" has strong affec tion for the soil. He depends prinei pally for subsi-tance o...

IN THE SPEAKER'S GALLERY. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 April 1881

IN THE SPEAKER'S GALLEtRY. By SuPPLEJxCK. Country residents who take an interest in polities, when, in' Mel bourne, generally wend their way up to the big house at the top of Bourke street; and there are others who take no intere.t in these matters go there also, their object being to buttonhole the hon. member who may be the representative of their district, and pour into his ears their several com plaints and grievances. It is amusing to watch how, while one elector has a hold of the member. others are waiting somewhat impatiently for their turn. Not having a grievance on this oc casion, I went with the simple inten tion of listening to the speeches of the members, and to take note of things generally. Having obtained a Speaker's order, I was in due course admitted at four o'clock; the House would meet for business at half-past four. Punctually to the minute Mr. Speaker was ushcred in with the usual formality;; and members straggled in as they felt inclined, or as their busi ness ...

The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 1881. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 April 1881

THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 1SS1. Ns take to ourselves thle credit of having at several times pointed out various-reforms whicl were desirable to be made in the general working of the Buln Buln Shire Council's busi ness, and at the same time congratulate those councillors who have appreciated our remarks and acted thereon. We must not forget, however, to bestow considerable praise on lMr. B. ). Surru, the Council's energetic Secre tary, for the excellent assistance he has rendered; and it will be a matter of some interest to the ratepayers for us to state that, at the present time, the general run of business is con ducted in such a manner as to com. mand universal satisfaction. We feel called upon to make a few remarks at this juncture, seeing that with the next meeting the resolution fixing the meetings fortnightly will lapse, and also that, on the re-assembling of Parliament on the 3rd of May, when the Supplementary Estimates are to be discussed, an endeavor is to be made to secure for t...

NARRACAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 April 1881

NARP, ACA N. (rROu OUR OWVN COERESPO-DENT.) It is not often I am able to string together a few items of gossip for the Guardian from this quiet locality. Instead of progressing, this place is ietrograding. When the Mirboo dis trict was first opened up for settle ment the traffic to that locality was through this township, and with the passing and r--passing of surveyors, selectors and their guides. this place was kept rather lively in those days. There were then two hotels and stores doing good business; now the hotels are both closed, and only one store remains. The reason for this filling off is not far to seek. The road from here to 3[Irboo crosses the Ten-:wile C:eck at a point where it is impossible to take any kind of wheeled vehicle, s that all stores taken to that district had to be packed, which was soon found to be an expensiv.. method. and a road tt the 31orwell railway station was soon discovered, to whi.ch the traffle originally passing this way was soon tran-sferred, l...

Almost every country of Europe has at one or other period of its history produced a galaxy of eminent men. As cases in'point I may instance Spain, undrer Chtrles V.; France, under LonisaXIV.; and England, nnder Queen Elizabeth. But it is very qnestiodnabte whether there has ever ap: peated such a brilliant band of contemporary orators and statesmen as those who flouri shed in Brittany''towarls the close of the Last and at the begitncng of' the present century. Burke, the two Pitt's, Sheridan, Canning, Grattan--these are great nates : but I trust I shall be excused when I say (and with a laudable prejudice it will bead mitted)...

The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, MAY 5, 1881. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 5 May 1881

THURSDAY, MiAY 5, 1531. Tux Warragul public have shown their appreciation of an Athen:eum Hall, Mechanics' Institute and Public Li brary by not putting in an appearance at the annual meeting called for the 30th ult., but which lapsed owing to only three of the coummittee, two of the public, and tile inevitable guardians of the peace being present. If our local institutions are thus to be treated as things of no value or interest to the community we represent, we had best lay down our pen and remain in sack cloth for a few months-at all events until such time as the apathetic con duct of our townsmen shall lhavre been banished, and a revival or struggle for prominence and self-denial for the benefit of their fellow-men shall once more have entered their breasts. The excuse usually adopted of sullicient notice not having been given cannot be pleaded, for it has been put proli neltly forward during the last three or four weeks. To say that ten mclm bers of a committee shouhl absent the...

WATERLOO POLICE COURT. [COMMUNICATED.] (Before A. W. Howitt, Esq., P.M.) [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 5 May 1881

WATERLOO POLICE COURT. [COMMUN5ICATED. (Before A. W. Howitt, Esq., P.a.) Gen. Fred. Wright v. G. J. Turner, assault.--Mr. A. Knott appeared for com plainant, and Sir Byran O'Loghlen for de fendant. Mr. lnott stated the ease against defen dant was that, on 18th March last, while complainant was riding homeward on the Bear Creek road, he did, by raising an axe, using threatening language, taking hold of his horse's bridle and endeavouring to pull comphainant off his horse, and committing other acts of violence, unlawfully assault his client. Sir B. O'Loghlen protested that as a matter of fact the road on which Mr. Wright was riding was not a public road, bat a por tion of Mr. Turner's selection, that the case was simply a dispute in respect to title, and therefore not within the jurisdiction of the court. Mr. Howitt ruled that as the charge was for unlawful assault he would therefore hear the evidence. It might, atba subsejuent stage, resolve itself into a question of title, which wou...
