CAPTAIN BUNKER DEAD. The well-known racehourse, Captain Bunker, dropped dead at Darbalara on Friday'morning last. A few months ago Ills owner (Mr. Tom Gardner) gavo Captain Bunker to Mr. S. Craln (UarbamraJ to ride as a hack until next stud season, wh'eu he Intended to use hiin for stud purposes. The horso was In excellent condition, andhis death cannot ho accounted for. When well. Captain Bunkor could hold his own in the best of country company, and his easy wins in the Flying Wel ter and Newmarket Handicap at the M.U.O.O. meeting at Gundagal last year demonstrated that ho waB a horso of borne class. Ho also scored wins .it Young, Tuiaut and other places. When he got out in front earjy in a race he always broko up his field. But ho was a dilllcult horse to get right,, as he suffered from troublesome feet. In November last he was put into train again, after a few months' rospite, and lie came on very quickly, and was do ing such splendid work that his owner was in high hopes of winn...

Burnt to Death. A CANOWINDRA FARMER. IN ORANGE HOTEL. Orange, March 9th.--Mr. J. Gillard, the licensee of the Terminus hotel received a shock this morning when he was informed by the charwoman that smoke was issuing from one of the upstairs bedroom.s On first making an attempt to en- ter the room Mr. Gillard was almost suffocated by the smoke. Presently however, he rushed into the cloud of smoke, and discovered Mr. John Webb who had been boarding at the hotel since Saturday last, lying dead on the bed, one side of his body badly burnt. The bedclothes and mattress were almost completely destroyed. Decea- sed had been sleeping in his clothes, one side of which were burnt. In one of his pockets, on the unburnt side of his body, was found £32 10s in notes and gold. Mr. Webb went to his room at about 10.45 p.m. on Mon- day. That was the last seen of him alive. The deceased gentleman retired some time ago from a farm in the Ca- nowindra district. He was well-known and highly respected. He...
