Mr. Schiff and the Religious Training of Children. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

Mr. Schiff and the Religious Training of Children. In addressing the members of the Hebrew Free School Association, at its annual meeting recently, Mr. Jacob H. Schiff said: -c Thirry to fifty years ago there hid been no deed to look after the religious training of children. It took care of itself; the mode of living made the children religious. It is different now, and it is awful to contemplate what would become of the next generation.' No truer words were ever uttered than these. Mr. Schiff is an acute observer, aud his comment upon Jewish matters is worthy of consideration. There is no family life among the middle and wealthier class of I Jews, such as obtained a quarter of a century and more i ago. The sanctified Friday nights, upon which the I family gatherings took place and the traditions of the I Jewish past were told by the elders to the young, and 1 the sanctification of the lights, are scarcely a memor y I now. The Friday nights were a sacred institution; § there was a s...

Feast of Purim. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

Feast of Purim. To most of our readers the events of the Book of Esther are doubtless familiar, and to those events the Festival of Purim owes its origin. The Babylonian Empire h d fallen, and the Persians ruled in their stead. Ahasureus (supposed to have been Artaxeres III.) occupied the throne. In the third year of his reign he made a feast to all his people, and his heart being merry with wine, he bade his Queen Vashti to come and show her beauty|ito his subjects. With mod sty the Queen refused. Actine on the advice of his counsellor he dethroned her, and chose another in ? her place. His choice fell upon Esther, niece of Mordecai, who had been taken captive at the destruc tion of Jerusalem. The king's Prime Minister, Haman, descended from Agag, King of the Amalekites, had in his pride issued a command that every one should bow down to him, which command Mordeca disobeyed. Spurning to have his revenge on one man alone, Haman, by cunning, gained the king's consent for the total an...

Sermon by the Chief Rabbi. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

Sermon by the Chief Rabbi. The Chief Rabbi, Dr Adler, preaching to a large congregation at the Great Synagogue, spoke on ' Sympathy,' taking as his text:—' Arid Joseph made haste, for his heart did yearn upon his brother, and he sought where to weep, and he entered into his chamber and wept there ' There was one word in the Judseo German familiar to every European Jew, the utterance of which seem to exercise a magic influence. When the Jew exclaimed t{ Nebbich ,^ on witnessing or hearing of anv case of crfmuine wretchedness, his heart was filled with pity, and it stirred him, as with a trumpet blast, to alleviate misery and to assuage woe. Its origin was shrouded in mystery. It was not certain whether the word was of Polish origin, or whether it was a contraction of ' Nit bei eueh' ' May this trouble not come on you.' The preacher said he did not know of a similar interjection in any language, and quoted some lines of a German poem, headed '' Nebbich,' of which the following is a tr...

Rich and Poor. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

Rich and Poor. By the REV. S. SINGER, London. Preaching at the New West End Synagogue the Rev. S. Singer, in the course of a brief sketch of the life and times of Amos, pointed out that while the Prophet condemned the sur rounding nations, each for its characteristic sin his severest animadversions were reserved for his own neoDle. It was Israel's materialism. their heartless luxury, their insatiable self indulgence, their utter disregard of the rights and feelings of the poor that roused his indig nation to its highest pitch. He saw the rich reclining at their ease on their couches of ivory, eating the most delicate viands, drinking the choicest wines in flagonsful, entertaining them selves with exquisite music, trying their utmost to save themselves from ennui, but all the while remaining untouched by the affliction of Joseph, by the physical and moral havoc raging among the masses. The sense of justice to the poor was dying out of their hearts ; the flesh and blood, the labor, th...

How to be a Blessing. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

How to be a Blessing. ' And I will make thee to a great nation, and I will bless thee ; and I will aggrandize thy name, and thou shalt be a blessing. — Gen. xii, 2. This sublime mission was entrusted into the keeping of Abraham, and he was a blessing to all with whom he came in contact. His great magnanimity is shown in his conduct toward the Sodomites. When they were pillaged ana robbed by the invading enemy, Abraham went to their rescue and retook all that they had lost and returned it to their owners without desiring any reward for his trouble. He dis played unsurpassing conduct to his nephew Lot, and everywhere he was recoguised as a prince of Grod. When we are then bidden by the prophet (Isaiah li., 1 2) to look to the rock whence we are hewn — to look to Abraham, our father — it is a reminder to take his conduct and manner as an example, and we, too, should try to be a blessing — a blessing to ourselves, to our fellowmen, to our congregations, and to our government. To ourselv...

Refinement. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

Refinement.^ It seems a pity that the word ' refinement' should have drifted so far from its simple and original mean ing, which was ' purification.' We still use it in that sense in regard to substances, and speak of the refining processes to which sugsr, metals, liquors, etc., are sub iected. when all extraneous or defiline matter is removed. But ' refinement ' as applied to individuals, does not generally convey = he idea of purity. Indeed, it is often supposed to have less to do with what is within a man, and proceeds from him, than with what . surrounds rim and acts upon him from without. There are persons who would indignantly resent the idea that they were lacking in refinement, yet who can only base their claim to it on the atmosphere of luxury and leisure in which they dwell. Their demands upon the world are constant and exacting, but that anything is expected of them seldom occurs to them. Their ap petite is so delicate that every land must be laid under contribution to mi...

Jewish Disabilities in the Transvaal. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 March 1898

Jewish Disabilities in the Transvaal. I might say (says a correspondent to the Jewish Chronicle) that the agitation recently started for the purpose of obtaining the removal of Jewish disabilities has so far met with lamentable failure. And, in spite of the pro fessions which the G-overnment appear to shadow forth and the cheerful optimism which animated the Committee, it is my opinion that the Executive have no intention of granting relief. Letters were sent to the Government pointing out that the Jews were labouring under very serious disadvantages, and, in reply, the Committee was requested to furnish them with a recital of the Special Articles which it was alleged pressed so heavily and unfairly on the Jewish community. A reply was therefore drawn up, which set forth inter alia that no Jew could become a landdrost, i.e., a magis trate : that no subsidy was allowp.fi to sr-,hnnl which were not conducted in the spirit of the Protestant faith ; that no Jew could enter the Civil Ser...

Are THfcRE Special Puovidences ? Many persons hive prided themselves upon their power to lay up for the future a goodly store and thus malie provision for the days of the '? seer and yellow leaf,' others have contendedly ♦ smoothed their pillows tor the last long sleep, confident in the arrangemet they had made for those near and dear to them, whilst some have struggled and wearied both brain and muscle, but never have passed the mark which gave them immunity from the ' wolf at the door.' These latter have often bee11 called upon to consider the question — one of those very perplexing problems- -and have in their eagerness often wondered if the Judge of those on whom special providences were bestowed was like the human oonception of justice — blinded. A learned writer. A J. Davies, in his book on the subject, cites cases which he styles 'special providences,' such as miraculous escapes from death \ the devastation of a city, and the saving of a village; the death of a favourite daug...
