STICKING UP OF THE TARTHRA STORE. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 1 December 1866

STICKING UP OP TUB .TAKTHJSA STORE. Intelligence readied town on Tuesday erening last, that the store at Tartluahad oeen stuok-up oh Monday night; and it seems somewhat strange' thkt the storekeeper was so dilatory in acquainting the police of the circumstance. The particulars, so far as we have been able to ascer tain, are sis follows:—It seems four men, on horseback, and disguised with masks, went to the store on Monday night about eleven o'clock, two of whom went insirle the store, while the other two remained outside. After light ing a candle and lying up the storekeeper they proceeded to ransack the stores, breaking open several cases, and taking away whatever suited them. A case, belonging to Mr. C. H. Witton, containing thirty-three pairs of trousers and other articles was completely emptied, and the con. tents carried away; also a case containing several jars of preserved ginger, one of which had apparently been drop, ped, as it was found on the Tarthra road by a man who was...

PUNCH IN PARLIAMENT. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20th, 1866. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 1 December 1866

PUNCH IN PARLIAMENT. Friday, November 20th, 1866. (From the Sydney Punch.) Mr. Punch's limited space prevents his doing full jus tice to the extraordinary proceedings which characterised the deliberations of the august Assembly under the above date. Having taken his place in the gallery at a latter hour than is his wont, he was for the moment under the impression that be had accidentally strayed into the wrong place, and that he was listening to the discussion of some learned society on the nature and habits of that useful but not over cleanly animal, the domestic porker, so often did the words " pig," ''swine," "sty," "wal lowing in filth," &c., reach his ear, nor was he altogether wrong in his reference, inasmuch as he fonnd the hull baboo was cau-ed by a quarrel among a number of well known legislative 6ores. Just as the affair was begining to grow decidedly interesting, Mr. liobertson with quiver ing lips and trembling accents called Mr. Speaker's at tention to to the fu...

|o«vC <w& ||fc«crftC COURT OF PE1TY SESSIONS. -t Tuesday, Nov. 27 th. '(Before E. Haslingden and R. Ritchie, Esqra., J.P.'s.) Lunacy. Charles Insley -was charged by his wife as being of un sound raind and unfit to be at large, behaving attempted to commit personal violence on her. The prisoner, some time ago, on a similar charge, was dismissed by the Bench, at the request of his wife, with instructions that if he got no better under her care she was to apply to the magistrates again. He, however, go worse, and at times threatened violence to his wife ; she therefore, in 'accordance with the previous instructions of the Bench, made the present complaint. The prisoner evidently exhibited in Court an unsettled and wandering mind by his incoherent and absurd remarks such ar, —that he was as strong as a lion—that no man could take him to the lock-up, as bis back-bone was nine inches thick, and that his ribs were all one solid plate of bone, and other symptoms of a dera...

The Bega [?]ette. "Quod petis hic [?]." SATURDAY, DECEMBER, 1, 1866 [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 1 December 1866

Wi)t fttga #ajtttc. " Quod petis Uic est SATURDAY, DECEMBER, 1, 1806 The Public Schools Bill is now fairly before the second branch of legislature—the Legislative Council—and the calm, gentle manly, and Statesmanlike discussion of that body is quite a contrast to the noisy, vituperative wangling of the Lower Cham ber; it really is gratifying to find that there are gentlemen in the colony capable of discussing great public measures with out descending to low invective, and atheistical denunciations of religion and its ministers. ■ We do not think that the supporters of Mr. Pabkes' Bill have any conception of the disastrous consequences to the interior of the colony this revolution of the present .educational system will bring about; they are hoodwinked and blinded by the pro posed plan of excluding all religious in struction from secular education, and mak ing the Public Schools independent of the influence of clergymen of all denomina tions. Just as if a plan, based upon such a syst...

ORIGINAL POETRY. THE BEGA RIVER. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 1 December 1866

— . —r ORIGINAL POETRY. ♦ THE BEGA RIVER. Onward, onward—onward ever, Bega's waters to the sea; Myriad streamlets, beauteous river, Waft their purling wealth to thee. From thy lone source in the mountains, Trickling downward dark ravines, Swelling forth to brjoklet's fountain, Curtained round by evergreens. Onward on, 'neath willow bowers, Down where scented wattles bloom, Deck'd by smiling forest flowers, Sending forth their sweet perfume. Push along, sweet winding river, Down thy pebbly bosom glide; Powerful, strong, along for ever, Downward towards the dR>rmy tide. Fairy forms and smiling faces, Rowed in beauty'6 favoured barge, Breathing thee in Sylvan graces, Flit along thy grassy marge. Hark, thy tall sons' laughter sounding, Vaulting o'er his fiery steed; Eyo of fire, with heart rebounding, Australia's hope in day of need. Farewell, Bega's peerless daughters May their beauties never fade; Farewell, Bega's tranquil waters, Fare ye well, each shining glade, Fare ye well, Jon...

EXTRAORDINARY PROCEEDINGS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 1 December 1866

EXTRAORDINARY PROCEEDINGS. On the 12th of last month, senior-constable Hogan of the mounted police, and at present stationed (no doubt for his sins) at a place called .Obley, wherever that may be, brought a prisoner, of the name of William Brotherton, before the Cowra Bench, on a charge of sup posed cattle stealing, bringing with him atthe same time quite a herd of cattle collected from various parties and paddocks in the neighbor hood. Strutting into the Court-house he ac costed Mr. M'Diarmid, who was the a on the Bench engaged in some other business, rather briskly saying, "Tour Worship, I have a man in custody charged with cattle stealing, ar.d^I wish you to remand the case to Molong or Dubbo." Somewhat surprised at such an, ad dress from an utter stranger, Mr. M'Diarmid looked up from the document which he was writing, and quietly inquired " Who are your" The stranger replied, " I am senior-constable i Hogan, stationed at Obley." No way startled I at this august announcement his...
