CROQUET. The Ivanhoe Recreation Croquet Club held their final meeting last month. The greens are now closed, being made ready for next season. BAPTIST S.S. CONCERT. The Fairfield Baptist Sunday School held a highly successful concert in the Park Theatre on the 19th inst. There was a large attendance. The chair was occupied by the pastor, Rev. J. Wor boys. Mrs Higgins presided at the piano with her usual ability. The pro gramme was supplied by the boys and girls of the Sunday School, with the ex ception of one item, namely, that of the " Allies in tableaux and song." This well staged piece was executed by the senior young people of the Surrey Hills Church of Christ, with Miss Woodhead as director, and Miss Greaves, of Fair field, as the central character "Britan nia." This item alone well repaid the audience. The other big item was that of "The Gipsy Camp and Laughing Chorus," by Miss Worboys and her Bible class girls, assisted by Mr A. Smith and his class of young men. This was effectively presented in fitting cos tume and camp fire arrangements. All the other items consisted of action songs beautifully arranged and splend...

The Returned Soldier. AN AFTER WAR PROBLEM. III. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 7 July 1917

The Returned Seldier. AN AFTER WAR PROBLEM. III.. In considering the question of the ieturned soldier, there is no more critical phase of a thorny problem than that which pertains to the de struction of his peace habits. As part of the civil population he had become by regular- and disciplined developiment capable- of sustained and unbroken physical and mental effort. One of the primary ma terial factors of civilisation is the oapacity to perform such duties as the individual has teen trained for without any serious lapses. A com munity could not cohere and pro gress, unless its component parts were interdependent in this way, and its absence would spell anarchy. T.he war has changed all this for a very considerable portion of our men. The daily eight-hour habit of work will, temporarily, have become so disordered as to cause many mis givings as to the outcome of the war, unless the matter receives care ful and thorough investigation. We pointed out the splendid work being done by t...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. SHIRE ELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 7 July 1917

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. SHIIRE ELECTION. Sir.-I attended the meeting on Mon day night to select a candidate for the shire election at Heidelberg. The chair man invited nominations, and two gen tlemen were proposed, namely, Messrs Haughton and Jones. The first one I admit I do not know,' but I have found out since that he has recently .come to live in,Heidelberg, and is of the firm of Coghill and Haughton, city land-agents, a young man, busy attending to his city business, and he is also a military man. I am afraid as the war is far from being finished every available man will be re quired to defend the empire. I cannot see how Mr Haughton can give the ne cessary time to council business, com mittee and ordinary meetings, and per haps thrust on the electors more expense by another election in the near future. The other gentleman, as was stated by several speakers, can give the time, and is well known to all the electors, having been a resident" for several years. Yours, &c., E...
