THE OUTLAWS. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 16 November 1878

THE OUTLAWS. The following items of news regard ing the outlaws will be read with interest, for which we are indebted to to the Melbourne dailies and the Mans- field Guardian:–   MANSFIELD, 10th November. On Thursday night some persons, supposed to be Kelly's gang, stole a horse, with his bell and hobbles on, from a paddock of Mr Monks. The family heard a low whistle, and then the horse-bells stopped ringing. On Satur- day night, by last post, Mr Edward Monks received a letter signed "Edward     Kelly," threatening to do for him, cut his ears off, gouge his eyes out, and follow him to the gates of hell to do that, and to treat his wife the same. Mr Monks helped the police to find the bodies of the murdered constables, and to hunt for the murderers, and the writer reminds him of it. Monks also made the discovery first of Kennedy's ear having been cut off. The letter is supposed to have been posted on Thursday night, and has no date or place on i...

1 lHnrldla&- Le R Staindard PlIIIS1llED EVE' ?T ATUILDAT " EXCE LhlO It." SATURDAY, 23RD NOVEI1BEII. ''THE very able letter which appeared in our columns a short time since, written by the chairman of our local Board of advice, upon the present Education Act, has doubtless beoo perused with much satisfaction by a large majority of our readers. The subject was therein fully entyred upon, and we deem it no more than our duty to refer to it, as just now un attempt is being made to alter its provisions and to in troduce certain amendments. That the Act of 1872 has proved most satisfac tory oven its staunch opponents freely admit, for although they are anxious that, religious instruction should be per. n.itted in our obhools, still they know full well that had not theo present. Act been in force thousands of our youth who are now receiving n fair education free would have grown up in ignorance --in some cases for the want of school accommodation in thinly populated dis triotes, a...
