The minimum amount per person was $50 to enter, but bowlers were encouraged to find as many pledges as possible. Behrend Greeks donated their time as well. Alpha Sigma Alpha (ASA) entered three teams and also offered sisters as volunteers for both nights. A chance for great opportunity [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 April 1999

A chance for great opportunity A view from the lighthouse. I he master plan calls for rapid growth of the Behrend campus (buildings as well as student population) clue to the (act that University Park's enrollment is too large. Knowledge Park, a training center which will he utilized by engineering students, is currently under construction. Also, a Research and Economic Development Center will be built on Jordan Road to accommodate the needs ol Business, Engineering, and Engineering Technology students. A response to forwarded chain letters [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 April 1999

A response to forwarded chain letters By Maria Savvas The Simpsonian Simpson College '"Warning: If you do not pass this on. something as bad as those in the stories or WORSE will happen to you." Please, if this were really true, I would have been dead a long time ago. Fortunately, I've been able to steer clear of any 18-wheelers that would like to make me their next road kill victim. Forwards. They are an almost unavoidable pan of everyday life for anyone who holds an email account. In my opinion, bored college kids who have a lot of extra time on their hands make up most of these stories. These little hassles are received on the average of three to four messages in a day. More if everyone has your address, less if you are one of the fortunate ones. If any of these stories actually come true, I should receive a check in the amount of $500 dollars, a trip to Disney Land, while possibly finding my soul mate in the next seven days. Do you think that if you forward a message to ...

NATO bombings accomplishing nothing [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 April 1999

NATO bombings accomplishing nothing The Critic JON STUBBS According to the Yugoslav Ambassador to the U.S., there have been "about a couple hundred" Yugoslav civilian deaths due to the NATO bombing campaign in Kosovo. This number is dwarfed by the number of Albanian refugees that have been either relocated or killed by Serb forces in Kosovo. But isn't one civilian death one too many, especially when it does nothing to speed up the peace progress between NATO and Yugoslavian President Slobodan Milosevic? NATO would argue no at this point, certain "collateral losses" must be accepted. In war, perhaps, civilian losses may be unavoidable. But this isn't a war, yet. So far it has been a heavily armed police action. A police action that is soon to be even more heavily armed with the promise of U.S. Apache helicopters and Bradley tanks to be deployed in a week or so if no peace agreement can be met. The bombings on Belgrade and most recently Aleksinac are mistakes. The refugees d...

Go to the back of the line! [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 April 1999

Go to the back of the line! AJ^lnweLiiiJ^GaHteiLQpJfe SHANNON WEBER Here s the situation: you are at a store and are in line to buy something. The lady in front of you steps out of line and off to the side to speak with a friend. The cashier gestures to you and takes your items. The lady, clearly not in line, announces that she was next in line. Has this happened to you? Maybe you're the person that steps out of line expecting someone to let you back in. Maybe you have dealt with a line cutter that wants to be with a buddy and so cuts in front of you or the person wanted something badly enough and decided to cut in line (i.e. housing contracts). Maybe it's because I am short and people think they can push me around so they step out of line just to see how far they can get. Well enough is enough. I believe if vou steo out of line to talk to a friend, you re out of luck, kid. The point is you WERE next and now you are not. Go to the back of the line. Now if you're the person...

^^ JSBKv*^ Letter to the editor: former staff member blows off steam [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 April 1999

^^ JSBKv*^ Letter to the editor: former staff member blows off steam Over the past few weeks I have been reading the Beacon. This may seem like a shock to those who know me because I' ve had my share of problems with the Beacon. After reading a few articles on the editorial pages, I decided that I would write a letter to express some disgust and anguish. I would like to start with the March 25 edition of the paper. The column titled Time to Complain really set me off, so I am going to start there. At this point it would help for me to state that I was a member of the paper staff last and the previous year. And I actually did try to help the newspaper to become better and not suck. However, each time I brought up an idea or questioned changes, I was always shot down. Why? Part of it I admit was because I didn't always do it in the best possible manner. When other staff members agreed with me that they didn't like something or wanted to change something, I was more than happy ...

Students studying overseas drink in more than just culture [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 April 1999

Students studying overseas drink in more than just culture By Jason Klabacha Campus Correspondent - University of Iowa College Press Exchange SWANSEA, Wales (CPX) - When American students head overseas for a semester, they often find that, among other things, rules for drinking and hanging out in bars change. There's no need for a fake I.D. in most of Europe because the legal age 10 drink is 18. The freedom to imbibe and hang out in European bars is something many American students have to come to terms with. And while officials at the University of Wales at Swansea say Americans don't stand out as being lushes, il is clear that some handle the cultural shift better than others. Clint Knox, a senior at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, can attest to that. Soon after arriving in Swansea, a coastal town of about 2.5 million in southeast Wales, he could see just how much some students struggle with the freedoms Europe provides. I woke my second night here about two in...

Kansas law student gets down to cases for Judge Judy [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 April 1999

Kansas law student gets down to cases for Judge Judy By James A. Fussell Knight-Riddcr Newspapers What docs Overland Park, Kan., law student Pam Aircy have in common with television's crabbiest justice, the formidable Judge Judy? As the in-your-facc jurist might put il in her own snappish vernacular, "I'm her boss, applesauce!" It's true. For the last six months, Aircy,, a 38-ycar-old second-year sludtttM the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, has worked part time for the moralizing magistrate, or more precisely for the company that produces her hit television show. Officially Aircy is a legal scout for the "Judge Judy" show, which features longtime New York domestic court judge Judy Sheindlin. Aircy's duties? Beat the legal bushes for lawsuits and litigants that arc, ahem!, distinctive enough for the show. Before litigants appear on the show, they must drop their lawsuits and enter into binding arbitration with Judge Judy, whose decisions cannot be appealed. ...

Hidden-camera tapes track naked college wrestlers [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 April 1999

Hidden-camera tapes track naked college wrestlers By Michael Htrslcy And Rick Hcpp Knight-Riddcr Newspapers CHICAGO - When Ken Kraft, senior associate athletic director at Northwestern University, got back to campus after the Wildcats' exciting but unsuccessful football odyssey to the Rose Bowl in January 1996, a disturbing package awaited him. Someone had turned in a camera case to lost-and-found at the Midlands Wrestling Championships, a national tournament held at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena on Dec. 29-30,1995. Inside the case was a camera and videotape. Kraft ran the tape and was shocked to sec footage of naked wrestlers in the shower room it the tournament.--His first instinct was to return the tape to lost-and found with instructions that "if anybody calls for this, direct them to me," he recalled. "I wanted to find out more." No one ever came for the bag and tape, which were then stored. Kraft, who was Northwcstcrn's wrestling coach from 1957 until 1979, minimized...

Ball State student survives after being dragged by train [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 April 1999

Ball State student survives after being dragged by train College Press Exchange ANDERSON, Ind. (CPX) - As a freight train dragged her car along the tracks for miles, 20-year-old Amber Scott, a student at Ball State University, retained every single detail of her brush with death. Speaking with the Associated Press one day after the March 29 accident, Scott recounted her harrowing ride. Her car, stopped in a dense fog at a railroad crossing that had no gate, was pushed into the train's path by a truck that rear-ended it. "I was just sitting there, waiting for the train," Scott told the A.P. "I looked in my rcarvicw mirror and I saw it (the truck) coming. I just gripped the steering wheel and closed my eyes." When she opened them, Scott could see the driver's side door of her 1989 Pontiac Grand Am pinned into the side of the Conrail train and the car's front stuck under it. The train's engineer, unaware of what had happened, continued onward, dragging the car and its frightene...
