< Practical Dairying Canada Cheese Factories F ROM the report of J . M . Wheaton , secretary of the Dairymen s Association of Western Ontario , given at their meeting held January 7 and 8 , we gather the -following interesting facts : There are on an average more than 83 patrons and 526 cows for each factory , which is considerably higher than the previous year . This would be an average of more than six cows for each patron , and if 350 be taken lis the number of factories , there would be ft total of 29 , 050 patrons supplying the milk of 184 , 100 cows to the cheese factories of Western Ontario . The largest amount of money received by any patron per cow for the season was $ 65 , and the lowest $ 6 , making an average of $ 23 . 34 , which was $ 2 . 51 per cow less than tbe year before . If 184 , 100 be taken as the number of cows , the estimated value to ¦ patrons of the cheese made in the district looked after by this association would be $ 4 , 298 , 894 . The average...

The Fig Tree [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 8 February 1896

The Fig Tree i F every one knew how easy a matter it I is to raise figs , even in this northern latitude , there would be many a tree tn be country growing on the south side of the house , convenient to receive the kitchen slops . On these two conditions , warmth and moisture , its success depends . A few years ago I visited my sister in Western New York , latitude 43 degrees . On the south of her house along the kitchen drain stood a cluster of these trees bearing two crops of fruit at once ; the larger figs were on the wood of the previous year s growth ; the smaller ones , on that of the current year . One crop had already ripened ; when I left , the last of August , the second crop were turning purple . So far had they advanced that we began to sample them . They are sweet and luscious either to eat out of hand or with sugar and cream . This lltthe orchard never yielded enough spare for drying , the only form In which we know the Imported flg . All summer long at short intervals...

Poultry and Bees [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 8 February 1896

Poultry and Bees Hen vs . Brooder FOR winter-hatched chickens , we prefer the brooder to the hen . Some hens will hover their chickens when they require it in cold weather and some will not In fact about fifty per cent , of them let their chickens stand about and cry from cold , while they are eating . Such chill1 Ings causes the chicks to take the dysentery and die . If the hen is in a protected spot , and in a snug and dry coop , it does not make so much difference ; but if there are . several hens with chickens , it is often Inconvenient , if not impossible , to give each hen and brood a first class place . With a brooder it is quite different . It can be set most anywhere , and not expose the chickens to extremes of temperature . AU well-constructed brooders have al small glass-covered run , or box , attached to the brood-chamber proper , into which a large per cent , of the warmth from the lamp enters , and so warms it up to a considerable extent , and when the chickens are fed...
