GROUSE AHD PARTRIDGE SHOOTTJTG . How to find the Game . AH OLD SPAHBH PODTEES . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 3 December 1853

GROUSE AHD PARTRIDGE SHOOTTJTG . How to find the Game . AH OLD SPAHBH PODTEES . ¦ XTRACTS FROM A SPORTSMAN S JOURNAL . Grouse and partridge shooting entail a considerable expenditure of bodily exertion , particularly the first , which has not been inappropriately styled , the fox hunting of all gun sport . But even these hitherto wild sports have , by the battaeing system of the age , been shorn off as much labor in the pursuit as possible by the overcrowded quantities of the game , preserved on certain moors and manors , In B ! X days three guns are reported to have brought down two stags , six hundred hares , and one thousand three hundred and eleven grouse . Another party of four , within the same time , bagged oue thousand and ^ ixty-two brace of grouse , besides hares and other game . Individuals are also said to have secured from fifty to . sixty brace each per diem . The result of this great slaughter has been , I am told , that grouse hav * been selling at two shillings a br...

THE BULL FIGHTS OF SPAE .. The Amphitheatre of Seville—The Torrero—Matador—Picador . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 3 December 1853

THE BULL FIGHTS OF SPAE .. The Amphitheatre of Seville—The Torrero—Matador—Picador . Seville is one of the most lively and animated towns in Spain . The people are gay and jovial , fond of the dance and song , friends of pleasure , and enemies of toil . It is here that we find the bull-fight in all its perfection . The Torrero and Matador are obliged to go through a severe course of training , at a school of Toromaohia , and to show much address , before they are allowed to appear before the public ; for the people are too good judges to allow any bungling in a performance to which they have been accustomed from : their infancy . The bulls used for the purposes am allowed to run perfectly-wild until they are old enough for the arena . They are then captured by tame animals , which are trained for the purpose ; yet the operation is not porformed without great difficulty , and much danger to the lives of the oaptors . MILLBETWEEffGEDHOEBBQWlf AND JACK HAZELTIBE , ForFifty Pounds a side . These professors of boxology having fixed that unusual period of ilie week , Thursday , for the settlement of their fistic argument , a jolly muster ofthe better sort congregated on that morning at the • Slioreditch terminus , and rattling down to North Woolwich , crowded the good craft Waterman , No . 1 , from stem to stern , she lying at that spot specially chartered for the voyage out and homeland liberally provisioned and stored with belly timber arid liquids for the same , in a style that would astonish the minds of some of the advertising emigrant agents , who deal in man-traps for the slow starvation of their unlucky victims . The day was delightful , but the dangerous practice of delaying the boat too long . at the point of departure , nearly prevented any fight from coming off at all . The ¦ Blues were everywhere on the alert , and though the commissary and his traps were quietly put ashore at Rainh . am...
